OGL: Kobold Press 'Raising Our Flag' For New Open RPG

I don't get the distinction here, could you elaborate?

OGL: Kobold Press 'Raising Our Flag' For New Open RPG

Now I began to read rulesets again, and I begin to feel that 3.5 was that perfect foundation and a lot of cool stuff was built on it (Pathfinder and 5e for sure). And I'm not that happy about Black Flag being just 5e with some tweaks. I would like to see something new but with the same motor

Is it time to revive the D20 License? (Or equivalent)

5e might be unofficial, but now I definitely equate it with something like the d20 logo for 3.x

D&D 5E Please suggest me some books about DM advices

The Practical Guide to Becoming a Great GM by Guy Schlanders is not really dense, it walks through a number of important issues in a system neutral manner. It is really about story telling, campaign/adventure/encounter design. It helps to get into the right mindset about running a game.

D&D (2024) RPG Evolution: Where Are the Board Gamers?

My feeling is that they don't know anything about their products, costumer and where they should/could go. Digital has become a buzzword, and everyone would like to jump in as there is nearly zero material investment and a lot of returns. If it is done right. But designing and publishing video...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

While there might be some fear for 3e as it had its own SRD which can still be revoked (or at least they can try), but the OSR is safe. If they could derive it from the 3e SRD they can do the same from the CC lincensed SRD 5.1 too.

Umbran asked what actions would it take for WOTC to 'make it right' for me. Here ya go!...

I would be happy with 1 and 2. SRD for older editions is not needed. Retroclones are better, use those games. As for 4e, WotC had the right to have a different model for that edition. If you need 4e ish rules, 13th Age has an SRD No need to give anything to the community (your point 8) from...

What's Past is Prologue: Understanding the OGL Licensing Controversy in Light of the 3e/4e Transition

The OGL was for the most part about selling books. One could not make a D&D movie, nor a Forgotten Realms musical or a new novel for Spelljammer. They still have their IPs, they could have still done all the computer games they wanted (Pathfinder already has 2 videogames, does 5e have any...

    A Mechwarrior: Destiny Review

I just liked BattleTech, and never cared about how realistic it might be. To be honest I would have more problem with the 2D star chart than ginat robots ruling the battlefield. But to each their own.

D&D (2024) One D&D gets gnomes close to perfect

Spoken from my heart. I just do not feel what is a gnome. In some sense I have the same problem with hobbits/halflings, but at least they had the clear role of being commoners and plum farmers. Over the editions, they have become more kenderish. Dragonlance tinker gnomes are at least unique...

D&D (2024) Split the Players Handbook into two books: Lower Tiers and Upper Tiers

Thanks for the hint, I have not yet seen DL: Warriors of Krynn Birthright (during AD&D 2e) was built around characters being leaders of provinces, churches, thieves guilds, whatever. So such ideas are not new. There characters had some powers that would only have a meaning on a grand scale...

    D&D (2024) Postmortem: 10 Ideas in 5e that didn't quite work...

But what if that only takes 30 minutes? My problem is not with how the DM presents a short rest, but why stick with a predefined duration? I have seen "gritty" house rules that extend short rest to 8 hours, and long rest to a week. But that just makes the story slower (the in-game story, not the...

D&D (2024) Split the Players Handbook into two books: Lower Tiers and Upper Tiers

If they would flesh out the army/thieves guild/wizard academy/etc part of those tier 3-4 levels, then I'm all for it. What I miss now is that high level only means more damage, more hp, more spells. Characters can save the kingdom by slaying the dragon. But can they stop an army? Can they feed a...

    D&D (2024) Postmortem: 10 Ideas in 5e that didn't quite work...

Alderac said it more elegantly. The DM has the script, so the DM knows what is an encounter and what is an act (sequence). So the DM can design these knowing what the players have as resources to them. And the DM can also just tell the party, that today session will be one act, or part of one...

D&D (2024) Customizing your starting class proficiencies:

During D&D 3.x True20 (Green Ronin) had a similar class building system. It might be prone to strange min/maxing. As for your example of a lizardman fighter. Heavy armour proficiency is a potential, not something you exploit at first level. So while your lizard fighter might not possess a heavy...

    D&D (2024) Postmortem: 10 Ideas in 5e that didn't quite work...

I frankly does not like the idea of removing the short rest. I would remove the long one (8 hours). Long rests based features are prone to invoke the 5 minute workday effect. So why not have encounter based and "act" based features. There is a set of stuffs you know you can use every encounter...

RPG Evolution - True Tales from Stranger Things: Kids on Bikes

Across the Iron Curtain things were pretty much the same. I lived (I still do) in the suburbs of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It is a mix of concrete residential blocks and village style parts. Biking and going about to see who was available to play/chat was a thing. Movies that was not for...

Worlds of Design: When Technology Changes the Game

In a fantasy setting, the battlefield use of magic is nicely depicted in the Wheel of Time setting by Robert Jordan. In the beginning of the series, the magic users are outside of the battlefield scene, in the sense, that they do not interfere with the direct war. Their stronghold was once...
