    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

45 minutes is about right for us, with major encounters taking 60-90 minutes. (My longest single D&D battle remains the 15-round , 4-hour spectacular in 3.5E at level 15... where not a single player lost interest!) We normally do two small encounters and one major encounter per session. The rest...

    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

I think 4E needed designers and developers who actually used it for their home games. And that was not always the case. There's an adventure design seminar on YouTube hosted by Chris Perkins and Mike Mearls at some Con where the audience asks the two WotCites to tell them about their campaigns...

    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

I've got it humming now so I'm more than happy with it. I've been spending a bit of time over the past few days exporting monsters from Adventure Tools - I had all my custom monsters already exported - and my only complaint is that I cannot print as nice a stat block to PDF. :) I did much the...

    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

I'm still running 4E but the availability of the 4E tools is a big issue for me too. I fully expect WotC to turn them off at some point but at least I now have Masterplan for building monsters (and a library of lots of custom and official monsters) plus a couple of other options to cover the...

D&D 5E Why is the wizards site so hard to navigate?

A couple of years ago, links were posted to an American "rate your employer"-type of website which revealed, inter alia, that WotC cannot afford to pay decent salaries to their IT staff so, as a result, they don't end up with the best people. So maybe the marketing/brand team is now responsible...

Pathfinder 1E How many DM's in a group is a good / bad thing?

I like having ex-GMs who have burnt out a bit on GMing in my group. They tend to appreciate what you do and also make an effort to be good players because they've been on the other side of the screen. It's also good to watch them get their confidence back.

D&D 5E Why is the wizards site so hard to navigate?

Likewise. I go there with a link from here or RPG.net and that's it. Visiting there otherwise is just an exercise in frustration. However, I'm a 4E fan (primarily) and that part of the website still works really well. It also has content....

D&D 5E How would you ensure longevity and sustainability for 5th Edition?

I would get as much sales data as possible from previous editions and then decide.

    New RPG Blog up @epiclevelgaming.com

The combat thesaurus articles were really useful. I don't know why I have never thought to compile such lists before! :)

Why Should You Vote In The ENnies?

I voted for one single reason: I want to see Pelgrane Press get publisher of the year. They've got one of the best ranges of products of any RPG publisher and it's time they got the gold!

Kickstarter Fabled Lands: The Serpent King's Domain now live on Kickstarter

I loved the Fabled Lands when they first came out. I still have them in very good condition waiting for my son to reach the age where he can go through them.

D&D 5E Is One Year Old!

Congratulations to Rich Baker for writing one of the best introductory adventures that D&D has ever had.

What makes us care about combat balance in D&D?

A problem, I would argue, that was exacerbated by the piss-poor adventures that were, by and large, released for 4E. Maybe if 4E had been released on schedule instead of six months ahead of schedule, the designers and developers might have got a better handle on the game. Because most of the...

What makes us care about combat balance in D&D?

For me, it's about making sure everyone can contribute meaningfully (as opposed to equally which is a false standard). That's the triumph of 4E, in particular. And the rules for combat are important because that's the part of the game where characters die.

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

I could not agree more. I frequently describe H1 as the best ad for Pathfinder that Paizo didn't have to pay for... and a number of times I have posted that, I have had immediate feedback from another poster on a range of boards that they decided to check out Pathfinder because WotC screwed the...

Note to WotC: They're not TRPGs. They're just RPGs.

"Tabletop" seems to be a word that attracts a bit of attention judging by the success of Wil Wheaton's show of the same name. But if this is about search optimisation, they definitely need to build a better website... which, of course, is another topic. Or real English. :)

D&D 5E Theatre of the Mind or Miniatures?

Definitely without. For us, 5E is what we use when we want something more like AD&D but playable as written. And playing AD&D means no minis. We've been together as a group long enough that we trust each other's judgement with respect to position on the battlefield. (I also like the...

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

That's because Rich Baker is so awesome that he cancels out that other person's influence. ;) (Anyway, now we know whom to blame for the crappy bits of Thunderspire... which is an adventure I really like! :) )

D&D 4E Good adventure that shows 4E's strengths?

On that note - and I certainly agree with your recommendation of Reavers of Harkenwold - I find 4E works best around a delve-like format of three (possibly four) encounters of building intensity in a single session that then result in a minor or major story goal being achieved. It's like the...

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

Clearly you never read the Mearls- or Cordell-penned 4E crapfests from the HPE series if you think Princes of the Apocalypse is the worst thing in 30+ years...! :) (And PotA is definitely better than the original, incomplete ToEE which had such a great concept - and cover art - and such...
