Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

CR fans of today are the Drizzt fans of 30 years ago. They're annoying but at least they're playing the game. Plus ca change....

D&D 5E What does Midgard do that Forgotten Realms and Wildemount don't?

Midgard has the best world map. Seriously. https://midgardmap.koboldpress.com/ For those who don't know, this was done by Anna Meyer who got the Midgard gig because of her outstanding fan work doing new maps for Greyhawk: ghmaps.net. How I wish I had the cash to pay her to bring her talents...

WotC Ray Winninger Is Head of D&D RPG Team; Mike Mearls No Longer Works on RPG

He introduces/re-introduces himself (three cheers for the original Dungeoncraft!) in today's release of the online version of Dragon: Issue 31 cover

D&D General Edition Experience - Updated Survey Results, Jan 2021 (All Surveys)

Yep. I do understand why 5E is so popular: It's basically the third edition of AD&D and it actually works!

D&D General Edition Experience - Updated Survey Results, Jan 2021 (All Surveys)

Interesting point. I am quite an outlier: 51, 39 years of D&D, and 4E is my favourite edition by a country mile.

D&D General How old are you?

    51. Started D&D in 1981 with a blend of Holmes and the 1E PHB before moving to Moldvay B/X and then 1E only. A fair bit of DragonQuest in between as well (technically the first game I DMed).

D&D General What Style of Campaign Do You Prefer?

    Somewhere between plot-building and world-building.

D&D General Your favorite things about editions that aren't your favorite.

Favourite edition: 4E OD&D: I admire the chutzpah, even if it was a mess. Inspired my favourite dungeon adventure of all time: Caverns of Thracia. AD&D 1E: I admire the chutzpah, even if it was a mess. (There seems to be a theme here.) Some really good adventures. BECMI: The RC is still an...

D&D 5E Temple of Elemental Evil is the next Original Adventures Reincarnated

I've never understood why this adventure was so popular. T1 was excellent; the rest was an incomplete pastiche that required a lot of work to make it into something coherent. It was also the end of my group being prepared to explore large dungeons. 30+ years later, they still feel the same way...

    D&D 4E Am I crazy? I've just gotten a hankering to play 4e again...

Good point. I forgot to acknowledge that in my post. Yes, you corrected me on that point and I went back and realised I had been quite wrong about it. Good to see another fan of @pemerton 's work. The comment about fans grokking 4E better than the WotC designers is very, very true, with few...

    D&D 4E Am I crazy? I've just gotten a hankering to play 4e again...

I would actually rather run 4E without a battle map than 5E. 5E's ranges are very large, as are the areas of effect, so TotM with 5E runs into the same problems I had with TotM in Holmes, B/X, 1E, and 2E. 4E's areas of effect - blasts, bursts, and auras - are generally much smaller and easier...

D&D General Which era and style/flavor of the Forgotten Realms do you play in?

I've been a fan of FR since the original articles in The Dragon/Dragon. Nevertheless, I prefer the 4E version because it leaves so much more room for the DM and for the players because the map has been cleared, so to speak, of so many of the great powers (including deities). The PCs now know...

    D&D 4E Edition Experience - Did/Do You Play 4th Edition D&D? How Was/Is it?

Any edition as unpopular as 4E must be outstanding. I’ve been playing and running D&D since 1981. (Not a big deal; just simply providing context.) Like @Oldtimer and @Ruin Explorer, 4E was the first edition that delivered for me the experience I was looking for when I was first told about it...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Revisits Psionics

I don't run 5E but this looks like it's going to save me some work on a version of psionics I was going to use for 13A: no psionic classes, per se, but the ability to swap out class talents (each class gets 3) for psionic talents.

D&D 5E Ed Greenwood's Border Kingdoms Now Available (& Official!)

Yeah, there were the articles in Polyhedron, some later parts were covered in Power of Faerun (IIRC; it may have been one of the other late 3.xE era books), and then some were covered on the WotC website. This, however, is a complete update of all the Border Kingdoms and includes an even better...
