D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

The other side of the coin is having a known "killer GM" and avoiding pretty much all combat. That's what I would do. If my character is just grist for the mill, she's not going to go out like that. She'll thwart the system somehow.

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

I would lose one PC at your table. My next PC would be a rogue, who simply runs away in stealth from everything that smells remotely dangerous. Said rogue would loot the bodies of the stupid PCs who aren't as genre-savvy. Profit.

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

Go sports! To me the game isn't about dice rolls and shining in combat and all of that. It's about a group of people discovering a world and going through trials and tribulations and becoming a team, or even, dare I say it, a family. It isn't a competition, the GM isn't the opponent, and my...

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

Today I learned that "not being killed by some random monster" is "being a superstar". I guess this approach works in combat-simulation games with no real overarching story or character buy-in. If it's just "let me throw my fighter at this group of kobolds, if he dies, he dies", then yeah, I...

D&D 5E How might elven societies be different from the norm?

I guess I wouldn't call such elves commoners, but rather "experts" or some such. I think every elf has some kind of specialization and training, even if it's just "farming". By non-elven standards, that farmer would be an advanced herbalist/horticulturalist.

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

Today I learned that I really like all of my GMs.

D&D 5E How might elven societies be different from the norm?

I don't see why there is any disconnect. For what it's worth, the "harmony with nature" bit is really just a function of low population, large territory, and minimal infrastructure. "Perfectly beautiful and clean and above mortal concerns" is a perception, elves themselves probably don't regard...

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

I kinda like this sort of thing. You get the dire consequences associated with a character death, but you still get to continue that character's story and through-line. And I think it makes for an interesting story angle. What happens when this character comes up against a society of high elves...

    Character background

Indeed. Playing a prickly character personality has to be role-played carefully. The other players always have to be aware that it is the character who is a fussbudget, that the player is herself not actually feeling the same way.

D&D 5E How might elven societies be different from the norm?

This is kind of how I envision non-evil elven societies too. They just aren't like humans, not nearly as acquisitive as dwarves and really just want to be left alone for the most part. They have all the time in the world to achieve their goals, and their basic needs are few and easily met. And I...

That does put a rather different complexion on things.

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

If I'm losing PCs at that rate, at some point I'm just going to stop trying. I'll just roll up barely disguised carbon copies of the lost PCs and continue apace. I'm certainly not going to actually try to craft a three-dimensional character.

I'm guessing your players know by now that they shouldn't get too attached to their characters, eh?

D&D 5E How many PCs have you had die?

My first ever character was a 3e rogue in Ravenloft. She died before she reached 3rd level, if I recall correctly. I've also had a 3e fighter in Forgotten Realms die, I guess he didn't check the challenge rating on the giant monster he was fighting. We actually had two PC deaths in that fight. I...

D&D 5E How might elven societies be different from the norm?

Well, if you want your campaign world to be super bleak, dark, edgy, etc., I guess you could have evil elves. I mean, we already have drow, but there's no reason the run-of-the-mill elves can't be evil too. Really, all of the demihuman societies could follow this same model, dwarves could be...

D&D 5E Summoning and Binding Demons in 5E

You could just handwave all this. If you want summoned demons in your game, just put them there. Maybe only wizards of this special school can summon them, or clerics of a certain unholy order or whatever. It doesn't really matter how they get there, it's what you do with them in the story...

D&D 5E How Many Classes Have You Tried?

Wow. That's harsh. Sounds like you might need to have a notepad of character sheets, so you can just peel it off and start a new one when your GM kills you.

D&D 5E In Your Opinion: Should Amnesia Impair Class Abilities?

I think it might be simpler to simply decide that warforged or whatever exist in the realms in a place that seems like a logical fit, that they are something new, and that the PC is in fact one of the first. With warforged, this is a pretty easy thing to do, since they are living constructs...

D&D 5E In Your Opinion: Should Amnesia Impair Class Abilities?

From a mechanics standpoint, I'd say keep it simple. For all abilities based on a physical attribute, there is no problem. The character knows how to swing a sword, tie a knot, disable a trap. If it is Wisdom or Charisma-based, then have them do a Wisdom or Charisma save in instances where you...
