    D&D 5E Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

I have yet to see a link providing an example. I decided to try it this way because I wanted to keep all the rolling in the front and to signal the beginning of a new round. Odd? Somewhat. I view it as high risk and high pay off. Sort of. Unless you absolutely have to be first in the round...

    D&D 5E Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

Many people like Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, Gimli, Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry. "Fly, you Fools!" Referring to the showdown with Gandalf and the Balrog. Regardless of Aragorn and Boromir's doing, there was still a lot of tension in that scene from those that seemed to be paralyzed. If you...

    D&D 5E Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

Correct. This, I believe is what creates the tension. Your mileage may vary, of course. Yeah, the media gets real feisty when you mess up their newspapers.

    D&D 5E Action Point Initiative

Embarrassed to say it but I miss the 80s. As a player, I would use any initiative system the DM wanted me to use and put my trust in his antics. Anyhoo. These alternate initiative threads are making me hit the 'old' books, looking for similarities. I copy and paste from Moldvay Basic, 1981...

    D&D 5E Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

I think it not only has to mesh with mechanics but it has to do the thing that it is primarily made to do. Add tension.

    D&D 5E Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

You can declare 'An Action' instead of specifically saying 'I Attack', or 'I use a scroll', or'I dodge'. Bardic Inspiration, in battle, would land when all the Follow-ups start to become resolved or within the next 10 minutes of the encounter. Or it could be already active before combat...

Gandalf Initiative: Declare Action, Movement, and Follow-up, then throw dice -Roll 1d6 if only Action -Roll 1d6 if only Movement -Roll 1d6 if character (PC and NPC) might want a Follow-up Other Possible dice -Roll 2d6 if Action AND Movement -Roll 2d6 if Action AND Follow-up -Roll 2d6 if...

    D&D 5E Action Point Initiative

Not sure about the action points. Can't recall ever using them. Otherwise I grok this not, but would love to add comments. I find initiative house rules interesting.

    D&D 5E Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

I remember those days. IMO those rules dissolved in an attempt to bring less tension between players. PCs are generally different then commoners so it is plausible for a female PC to have an exception. Because there is always one. People will argue with you for days about it but be okay with...

    Pulling the plug

Stay optimistic. The sole purpose of 4th edition was to get me reacquainted with my OSR roots. The money I saved helped me buy a bunch of tools for my garage. I didn't sell my 4E PHB because it does not make a difference about how I feel about it. It's just there. In my bookshelf next to other...

D&D 5E How Did You Get Used to Roll 20 or Fantasy Grounds?

I own FG and have also played on Roll20. FG is the sexier of the two. Roll20 is antiseptic and white roomy. If you want to talk and look at a map, I think roll20 is easier, but it takes some skill at lining up maps. I watched a youtube video on how to do it. Super simple. FG costs money and to...

D&D 5E Can water provide cover?

If you explain what is happening using mechanical terms that the players understand they might question your ruling based on RAW. That is normal. Make your description of a dragon swimming in a deep and dark pool, without the terms "having 3/4 cover". You can beef up AC on your monster stats for...

D&D 5E What is your preferred style, and what tweaks do you do to get there?

Every once in a while I will offer the players a Black Flag encounter. I tell them it might mostly likely probably kill their PCs. But the rewards are very high. Likewise, I will ask them if they want a Care Bare encounter and walk away with no loots.

D&D 5E What is your preferred style, and what tweaks do you do to get there?

I have used CR to build ranger companions. Other than that, I use instincts to build encounters. And I forgot to mention that I usually make up my monsters. When using a monster in the MM, I roll their HP. Sometimes I change their stats. Currently running a campaign with a house rule that...

D&D 5E To own 5E books or not to own 5E books that is the Question

I hate errata so I am not buying anymore crap. Make a product that is ready when it is released. Talk about pirates, jeesh. EDIT: Also, it is kinda hard to tell my players to buy a PHB when mine fell apart and I present the PHB to them in three separate folders. When I am not complaining...

    D&D 5E Why stop at Level 20?

How strong would a 25th level character be if their class progression was broken up into 3 or 4 classes?

D&D 5E What is your preferred style, and what tweaks do you do to get there?

Not that it matters to me, but for the sake of clarification I will just say. Seriously.
