THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Right...because no one saw the LotR trilogy of movies except us geeks.

D&D 4E 4e Races and Classes: "Why we changed the gods"

Ugh. I caught 'flimsy background' and 'dumbing down.' From what's in R&C, the implied world has a lot more than 'flimsy background.' Enough that I would like to see it fleshed out into a more-than-just-implied setting. Dumbing down... trimming 30 years of fat is not dumbing down. Re-vampng the...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

To honor 'truth in reporting' and all that... R&C states "Dragonlance presented AN iconic image of the gnome..." (emphasis mine.) So, they aren't saying that the DL gnome was THE D&D gnome. I think they did a good job with the 3E iconic Nebin as THE iconic. Obviously not iconic enough. (FWIW...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

True. Allow me to broaden my category to include all fans of all 'pop fantasy.' A person that is not a fan has a vastly different concept of a gnome than one that is. Of course, we could debate the odds of a non-pop fanatsy fan picking up a D&D book... The R&C book states that the Dragonlance...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Amongst gamers and D&D fiction fans, sure. But 4E is going for broader appeal. If you don't read D&D fiction, your gnome archetype involves the Travelocity spokes-gnome, lawn-gnomes, and short fairy tale creatures with pointy red hats.

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Put a pointy red hat on your 4E halfling... *p00f!* GNOME! Am I being silly? Yeah. Would this totally work? Absolutely. It would be super-easy to call the 4E halfling a Gnome in your world, just change the name and as much of the fluff as you feel necessary.

    D&D 4E Fewer WotC books in 4E?

Excellent (also unsubstantiated) point... throw that log on my fire! I don't think WotC has anything to fear about a 3rd party product overshadowing official stuff for quite some time. Granted, there are some great 3rd parties out there, but I don't think they will be able to improve the game's...

    R&C: Halflings...

Suspension of disbelief. For fantasy to work, it has to be believable, or at least something that one would wish could be true. IMO, 3', 35lb halflings were ridiculous. 4', 65lbs is better, but I would like to see them even bigger, like 4'6" and around 100lbs. Dwarves could be 5'-ish. To me...

    D&D 4E Fewer WotC books in 4E?

Finishing what I started above... Will this leave holes for third party? Maybe... it depends on the nature of the license. Also, I would expect that if a third party rushed out a psionic book (for example) it would be superceded by the official one in the future. By that I mean, later official...

    D&D 4E Fewer WotC books in 4E?

I think fewer books, but each one indispensable. As opposed to 'core' and 'splat,' it will all be core. The expectation will be that each book sells more on its own. Plus, it appears that there will be a DM book and a PC book per setting, which enables more sales to players. If this is the...

    From R&C: Fighters & Armor

It's not arbitrary at all. The 4E fighter is the stereotypical martial defender. He defines the front line and doesn't let any baddy past to his buddies. 'Archer' doesn't fit under fighter anymore. Which actually makes perfect sense to me. Will you be able have a fighter that's good with a bow...

    From R&C: Fighters & Armor

On the whole "I want an archer that's not a ranger" thing... I think for now we have to be happy with the ranger. They can't pack it all in the first PHB, so they're going with the strong archetypes. As it is, they are providing an assortment of roles and classes. For now, the fighter (and the...

    Races and Classes--I has it!

The original article had four implements (inc. tome.) the current has just three, like R&C. But I do agree that the R&C text about the purpose of the implements is closer to that of the original article. I'm willing to bet that we'll see three versions: the design article, the R&C article, and...

    Races and Classes--I has it!

Shssh! Don't tell him! Well, I'll blame the spell failure on the fact that I didn't phrase it as a yes/no question. So here goes again: "Of the following two articles on warlocks--the R&C version and the Oct Design and Development version--is the latter the most representative of the current...

    Races and Classes--I has it!

Yeah, which is why my original guess was the Oct article as the more current. BUt since R&C matches the newer wizard article, it gave me something to hang my hat on. Although, at this point, it does seem easier to scale back from 4 to 3 for space and/o time constraints. Who knows? [Commune w/...

    Races and Classes--I has it!

This brings up a good point--what is more current.... R&C or the design articles? Th design article in Oct mentioned three pact sources... infernal, fey, or shadowy. That's pretty different than R&C. I thought I saw somewhere (maybe it was speculation) of an elemental pact as well. EDIT: My...

    D&D 4E WotC's made some good 4E names, too!

Oh yeah, I think those are great, too. I forgot about them in ligt of the rampant discussions about feat names.

    From R&C: Fighters & Armor

Not that I've seen so far. I've only read Fighter and Rogue (and the little ranger blurb) as far as classes go. The Fighter section also had the armor & weapons stuff, rogues had the skill stuff. The book makes a point about all the classes being balanced IN COMBAT versus the old approach of...
