Thanks for the program suggestion! I used it today to create a size comparison between my character and the largest character in the group:

Pretty good! Any way to make a little more of the handle stick out (so that it is a little more clear what it is poking out over his shoulder)? Still, beggers can't be choosers, so one way or the other, I will take it and be happy. :) Thank you!

Hey, everyone. I was wondering if there might be a digital artist able to help me with a minor image modification. My skills in this area are woefully lacking. I don't even have the right tools. In any case, I have attached two images to this thread. One is a halfling ranger I have found. The...

D&D 5E Forgotten Realms is being BETRAYED by Wizards

I was fine right up until I read this line. The scent of sarcasm filled my nostrils like good old morning napalm, but the reference was just far enough over the horizon of my memory not to induce a full-blown attack of PTSD--the S stands for sarcasm, of course. The taste of coffee swished...

Unearthed Arcana Question about Ranger Unearthed Arcana: Primeval Awareness

So, he can sense any creature that has the "humanoid" type. If a creature is shapechanged into a different type of creature, he can or cannot sense them depending on the wording of the shapechange powers. Some powers actually turn you into the creature, and as a result you now have the new...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

Nope. You are not likely to find one either. The opinions are too divided. It's like trying to engage in hyperpartisan politics. It's a practice in self-congratulation as opposed to thoughtful analysis. My suggestion to you is to play the game. Come up with your own opinion, based on actual...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

That is absurd. Everything you just said the ranged character can do the melee character can do, and he can do it better. That doesn't equate to the ranged party "winning." Melee characters can act like second class ranged characters too. It's nothing to brag about.

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I wasn't talking in terms of the whiteroom duel with kiting. I was talking about the use of a single round of ranged attacks before closing in a scenario where kiting isn't viable. If the PCs are guarding, yup. I have seen those sorts of tactics used. On the other hand, if the NPCs are...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

Fair point in regards to the medium armor choice, but it won't make that much of a difference. In terms of the comparison I provided, that changes the numbers to (0.30*19.5)+(0.05*25)=7.1 and (0.3*16.5)+(0.05*19)=5.9 for a total of (3*7.1)+5.9=27.2 average damage against the archer by the...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

Ah. I see what you are saying. I didn't think of that. My bad. Mind on other things and all that jazz. Fair enough. So the fighter puts a 12 or 14 in Dex and uses a longbow as its ranged fallback. I have seen more than one melee character do that at the tables I have played at. Or it starts with...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

You are right. I wasn't accounting for kiting (mostly because I have never seen kiting happen in a real game, and I wanted to avoid white-room conceits that skew the example away from reality as much as possible). In a simple white plane, however, I guess kiting would become a thing. So, the...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

That is true. After that, however, what you wrote isn't how analysis is done. You provided rough guesstimates and left information that hindered your argument out. We need actual targets and actual Armor Classes in order to perform an analysis. You also gave the archer a +2 bonus for a fighting...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

P.S. if the argument is that, on a bright white plane, a character who starts out attacking from range and a character who waits for the melee engagement and then starts fighting in melee should be roughly equal in power/should (over the course of the entire encounter) do roughly equal damage...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

No, it is true in every game. The feats an archer takes do not up their damage way above that of a melee warrior. Melee warriors have feats that up their damage in very similar manners. There is no purely numerical argument which indicates that archers do more damage, have better AC, and are...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I've largely avoided this thread up until now. I have decided to come on and give 2 quick cents: melee is already hands down better than ranged combat from a pure numerical point of view. You get a better AC and more damage with a strength based melee set up. If you opt for a shield, you have...
