    Essentials Game Day recap

Since the Essentials books were already out, our DM let me create a new character so I statted out Pholtus in about 5 minutes, gave him a +1 sword (everyone else had one magic item), and was ready to go.

    Essentials Game Day recap

I would definitely opt for a sunpriest for the ability to grant saving throws. The stormpriest deals extra damage, which can be replicated by any striker. Being able to hand out saving throws is a much rarer ability.

Rules Missing from the Rules Compendium

Well, the rule in the core books was that you can get any mundane item you want if you're starting at a higher level, subject to DM approval.

"They told me it was something else."

Can't you look at the growth of D&D in other countries as a point of comparison? As far as I know, the great 80s scare was mostly a US thing.

    Essentials Game Day recap

They played somewhat similarly to one another, but I did notice that the sunpriest was more defense oriented and the storm priest was oriented more towards offense. The sun domain at-wills for example either granted resist all or granted a save. The storm priest at-will either increased damage...

    Essentials Game Day recap

I played it at Black Diamond Games in Concord, CA. There were 6 players, 4 people new to 4e with varying experiences of playing D&D ranging from pathfinder players to people still playing 2e in a home game. The fact that a lot of the rules had to be explained to people meant that we didn't get...

    Race First!

Hmm...I don't find the appeal of this personally. But mainly because I don't choose race because of stats. I just pick what seems the most appropriate based on the character concept I've come up with. Looking back at the last few PCs I created, half fall under creating the persona first, and...

Heroes of the Fallen Lands analysis

That's sorta true about the core 4e Rogue builds as well I think. A lot of the secondary functions of powers that are dependent on a second stat aren't as good as an extra +1 to hit/dmg. I think it's commonly accepted that Rogues and Wizards are the two classes that can get away with pumping...

    Party member down!

Make him warforged! We can build him stronger, better, faster...we have the technology! Can't find a cleric for a rez? Get him to an artificer and transfer his consciousness into a hunk of metal. Fun roleplaying angst for the character as he gets used to his new body.

When you notice something's not right with the campaign...

Sounds like the target is ripe for some serious targeted dispel magics/disjunction... Like the others said, I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. In fact, I wouldn't worry about it until you're prepping for the actual encounter. Lots of things can happen in 8 levels.

    Long Combats are Bad

Most fights in 4e seems to last around 10 minutes per player for me, so around 50 minutes for a 5 player group. If I want combats to take half that duration, I could probably just half the monster's hit points and double their damage output. But the main impediment I think for battle-lite...

    Making meals of Monsters

I think every other halfling I've seen had profession(chef) or some sort of culinary background, so yeah, I've seen lots of PCs that like to harvest their kills. Not sure what the ethics of eating sapient beings though...but these characters were not prone to philosophical debates.

I'm just curious...do you own every WotC book ever made? Because these lists are ridiculously thorough. Kudos!

Some Improvements for the Red Box!

Some of the improvements above would add a level of unnecessary complexity for the target audience of the red box. The starter set red box is directed towards those who probably don't even know what a role playing game is about. The later books in the series is probably better to start with...

Advice For Running An "Evil" Campaign?

How about instead of heroes using a town as a base while they go into dungeons to defeat its denizens, you can have the anti-heroes use a dungeon as a base with a goal of taking over a town. You can detail a smallish town (complete with defenses and notable NPCs that might stand in the PC's...

Which Published Settings Have You Played In?

I think I bought all of the various settings, but only ever played in Greyhawk, Mystara, FR, and Eberron.
