What are the cliched "first session ever" moments?

    Do healing items stack?

That change was only made to the cleric's healing lore feature. Keep in mind that you do not count as an ally, so you'll need to keep track separately the different totals when you heal yourself or an ally.

Heroes of Shadow: Assassins, Hexblades, and Necromancers!

I can see an argument for Necromancers being a new thing. A true hybrid of Controller/Leader. Use necrotic energy to heal the party or unleash minions. Likewise, all their powers can have this life/death dichotomy, with a kicker that can be chosen when the spell is cast. It'll be an...

    About Implements...

Other than the staff, swordmages use any heavy or light blade as an implement, which means that any arcane class can do so by taking a feat. Also, there are specific magic weapons that can be used as implements. In terms of damage, weapon implements are actually better since you can spend...

    Teleportation Question

I'd say no. Teleportation is a special form of movement, not regular movement and I think Grab specifies Tactical Movement rather than any form of move or move action (moving a grabbed target requires a Standard action). In any case, moving by grab specifies that you move the target by a...

Free trip to GenCon on WotC

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (D&D Never Split the Party) Interesting. Seems like WotC is trying new ways to get in the news. I heard about this from a local radio station.

Fun to Read... Boring/Bad to Play

I've had the reverse: boring to read, but fun to play. That being 4e D&D Player's Handbook. Reads like a dry textbook, but the combats are way fun. But going back to the OP's point, I remember Torg as falling into the "fun to read, but not so much fun to play" category.

    Mapping Infinity

The plane might be infinite, but the places that the PCs have been to, and the places that they want to visit are most definitely finite. Take a look at the 4e DMG and embrace the whole points of light concept. You don't have to map all the points in between where you are or where you need to go.

I want to roll my dice!

Have the PCs fight an order of tempus avengers all wielding vicious fullblades. That'll wear out your d12 real quick.

Skype or Ventrillo will let you talk to one another. Google docs can be modified by everyone you share the doc with. Lots of people still use AIM to play.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Helping a Former 3.5 Player Get 4e

One of the things that trip up people coming into 4e from 3e is Opportunity Attacks (Attacks of Opportunity in 3e). Only a few things trigger OAs. 1) Attacking with a ranged or area power adjacent to an enemy. 2) Moving from a square adjacent to an enemy. That's it. You can stand up from...

Damage of two types but immunity to one

"Resistance or immunity to one keyword of a power does not protect a target from the power’s other effects." It affects it fully. 20 fire and cold damage isn't the same as 10 fire and 10 cold damage. It's 20 fire/cold damage.

    Character concept

I would go with Invoker actually. Avenger damage isn't much better (their striker feature is in hitting more often, which works out to higher damage, but doesn't feel like it in play). You can go with a staff or ruin, weapon focus, syberis shard of the mage, high wis...and it does decent...

    Dexterous Cleric

At low levels, a simple elven cleric with longbow is pretty good. I would drop the quickdraw feat since you don't really need to have anything in your hands other than a bow - if you're getting attacked in melee, you're doing it wrong :) Cleric powers for short range and basic ranged attack at...

Dragonborn Sorceror Decides to Drink Blood

It might've been a while, but open up the ole Dungeon Master's Guide. The 4e version of the DMG is one of the best ever produced to help out DMs with useful advice. Start on page 8 on Player Motivations. Your players sounds like an Instigator. Also, check out page 32 on Problem Players just...

    Race/Class combinations and setting implications

Great breakdown of the classes! I see dwarven shamans though as more as ancestor veneration rather than nature worship, and dwarven druids as caretakers of the underdark/mountain ranges as well as mineral resources rather than tree loving hippies.
