The (Non-)Playtest Experience, or How the Hit Die Mechanic was a Non-Starter

If I was publishing a game and one of my playtesting groups said this, they would no longer be a playtesting group. I'm pretty sure refusing to play because you dislike one mechanic means you're out of the target audience for the game, and that type of behavior is something I quite frankly...

Lists of what I am not allowing will be passed around the room.

I think this is the core of what's happening. D&D Next is effectively making the transition into "generic system" territory, and that shift comes with some baggage. I'm an avid Savage Worlds guy, and if I'm running a swashbuckling pirates game I disallow any races outside humans as well as...

    D&D 5E I Don't Like Damage On A Miss

As a side note, and somebody who gladly purchases his copy of The Flash every month, I can't help but notice this. http://www.crisisoninfinitemidlives.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Flash6-2.jpg So yes, a particularly experienced fighter can land a hit on The Flash. And they typically do. In...

    D&D 5E I Don't Like Damage On A Miss

I've always wondered why AOE spells in D&D land precisely where the wizard wants. It's a lot more exciting when the fireball scatters a bit.

Dear Wizards of the Coast blog post...

So, she's saying that a game company should stop making new games? I'm also inclined to laugh at somebody who uses college textbooks as a proper publishing model, but lectures on planned obsolescence.

    How to stop runners?

I can understand the concern, having to rely on magic for something as simple as running down a kobold doesn't quite sit well with me. I like the idea of having some form of chase mechanic, in 4e I always called for a short skill challenge in this case. Then again, if you're in the kobold's...

    Drunken Dwarf Defender

A wild Ogre appears! Dwarf cleric of Moradin! I choose you! Dwarf cleric of Moradin uses Beer! It's super-effective! I have absolutely no problem with this. Encouraging dwarves to drink up before a fight? That's flavorful mechanics if I've ever heard them. And flavorful beverages.

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

And that's how derogatory language is born. Every game mechanic falls under the definition of "dissociated" from some perspective, assuming you go by the definition stated. There's an argument that can be made to the level of dissociation or abstraction in a given mechanic, and I think that's...

    D&D 5E I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

This argument I can accept, even if I disagree with it. I'm still far more inclined to make all races optional rather than imply anything isn't setting-specific.

    D&D 5E I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

Considering the number of novels, video games and other products with the D&D label on them that have featured these settings, not to mention how long they've been around, I have a hard time buying into these arguments. If we're talking about brand identity, D&D has grown far beyond the group...

    D&D 5E I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

If that's the case, then which races do you consider bloat? Anything but humans? Anything but the big three? Anything that wasn't included in first edition? You don't think dragonborn should be included in the PhB for reasons that you believe, likely based on your personal experiences...

    D&D 5E I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

Considering their popularity, I think drow should make that list as well. I'm not a fan of them as PC's, but I think they're a perfect example of a race that may be maligned by veteran players while appealing to new blood. I don't like Drizzt, but he provides an excellent gateway into D&D.

    D&D 5E I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

But referring to Dragonborn as "bloat" is an exceptionally biased view. If the argument states that bloat needs to be removed then the argument becomes where to draw the line between an element adding to the game more than it takes away. Your opinion is that Dragonborn are bloat, I'd imagine...

    D&D 5E I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

I truly doubt that removing Dragonborn from the PhB would make the game more inclusive. If the entire goal of D&D Next is to be the "Big Tent" edition, wouldn't it make more sense to have as many different races as possible in the PhB rather than restricting it to the "classics" of 1e? If you...

Please step away from the 4th edition "effect everything" abilities.

It's also possible that what a paladin deems "unworthy" has more mechanical backing than just whatever the player feels like smiting at the time. And a ranger gaining extra damage with every attack isn't necessarily bad or wrong, just another way of playing the game. Think of it more like...

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

While I really like the idea of magic being dangerous, the idea of potentially not casting a spell while taking damage is hardly such. I'm far too accustomed to the idea of "dangerous" magic potentially killing the caster when things go awry. I think there's plenty of things you could add in...

    Supporting Diablo-style Gameplay

I think this along with extensive use of "minion" rules would do wonders to support that style of play.

    Not D&D

I've been a fan of Savage Worlds since it's release, it's by far my favorite system for a large number of reasons. I've also been showing a lot of love to WFRP, Mutants and Masterminds and Call of Cthulhu. I've been dying to try the Warhammer 40k games and Mouse Guard. I really want to like...
