Avoiding "Glut" (Maneuvers, tricks and other options)

For my particular tastes, I completely agree with you. I'm particularly curious how they manage to satisfy the players who want highly detailed swordfights with clearly defined powers while satisfying those of us who want a more streamlined system. I like the way Savage Worlds handles such...

D&D 5E Making Abilities More Meaningful in 5E

By the sounds of it, the entire system is based around the ability scores. I think you'll get your wish in spades.

If WotC deliver on all their promises...

Regardless of what it looks like, I'll pick it up and play it for a while. If history repeats itself, which I have every expectation it will, I'll play until I really learn the system then learn I still prefer Savage Worlds. As always, I'll give it a fair shake.

When did the Fighter become "defender"?

As another video game reference, I compare the defender role more to a tank in League of Legends than World of Warcraft. The "tank" in that game is typically the most aggressive player, who jumps into the middle of the fray at the first opportunity, causes as much chaos as possible and draws...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

But plenty of people want that, and having multiple different types of orcs supports a larger number of playstyles. Best I can tell, most people want three different things in their monsters; brief stats that are easy to incorporate, multiple versions of a given monster to grant variety or a...

    Value of a copper piece

I'm mostly inclined to use it due to the statement in most editions that the 10 copper per day is enough to live assuming the commoner grows a good portion of his own food and maintains a standard of living according to a pseudo-medieval commoner. While that $7000 USD has different meanings in...

    Value of a copper piece

I prefer to compare a D&D commoner to the median worldwide income rather than US minimum wage. This puts that 3650 cp per year equivalent to $7000 US. The math puts one copper at $1.91 US, which I find to be a little more palatable. Magic items are still an absurdly unrealistic economy, but I...

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

I'd guess it's somewhere in the middle, assuming there's a default at all.

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

Which is a large reason why I'm a big advocate for a sliding scale of lethality. Introducing a module to make monsters and PC's more or less durable depending on taste will help the game "feel" like what D&D "should" be to more people. That way those who prefer early editions can have kobolds...

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

I think part of the problem is also in the gap between "Level 1" and "kobold." We haven't been in the days where a humanoid followed the precise rules for monsters in a long time, even in 3.X you'd have to specify "Level 1 kobold warrior." People keep referring to a "standard" kobold when it...

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

Honestly, I think the biggest problem with this argument is the same problem with so many edition-war-spawning discussions; the absolute statement of what D&D "should" be. Person A wants adventure scoped balancing, where some players dominate some encounters while others dominate others while...

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

I'm inclined to agree. If the question is posed "Should a fireball kill a kobold" I think the best answer is an even split between "depends on the kobold" and "depends on the fireball."

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

So the argument basically goes as such: All kobolds are killed by Fireball in D&D. (All A are B) Some kobolds are not killed by Fireball in some editions of D&D. (Some A are not B) To elaborare from other posts: 4th Edition Kobolds Some 4th edition kobolds are killed by Fireball. (Some A are...

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

I've played plenty of games from 2nd edition on where a fireball failed to kill kobolds. Between class levels, advanced monsters, poorly rolled damage, well rolled saves and any number of other factors.

Reaper Dark Heaven Bones (cheap unpainted plastics)

Not to mention the zombie strippers.

Reaper Dark Heaven Bones (cheap unpainted plastics)

I did a dance of joy when I saw this. I love Reaper's work and I greatly enjoy painting miniatures, with this I can finally have the monster collection I've always wanted. I really can't wait until they start doing some of their more recent sculpts in this material.

How long should a round represent?

I don't bother assigning a specific time length to any given round. Fights and scenes play out as they play out, and after the fight if anybody asks how long it takes I choose a time length based on how long it felt. There's nothing saying you can't abstract the length of a round, I've done it...

    Balancing Save-or-Die

I think Mutants and Masterminds handles it in an interesting way. Instead of removing SoD from d20, the entire damage/effect system is effectively SoD. Normally if you hit someone with a damaging effect, they need to make a Toughness save with a DC of 15 + Damage effect, so a handgun with...

Limited Resting and the Hour Long Rest

Linking rests to meals? Give halflings an ability to process more food in a day. Second breakfast, elevensies, lunch, dinner, supper, afternoon tea? Edit: All joking aside, I really like the idea. It makes rations important, and not having them as bad as I imagine it. An army marches on...

[Savage Worlds] New GM to SW and Sundered Skies...

I should probably do this. I came up with a campaign about six months ago, and it's kind of taken a life of its own. We started by playing the descendants of the bad guys in the final war of good and evil, and wound up creating an entire society through courage, grit and blood. We just jumped...
