D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

oh ok. Yes I'd say that the cloak is an extension of you, and requires everything you do to cast the learned cantrip. By its magic it does the V and S components itself, and as long as you have the component pouch or however the DM of the game decides to count M components (focus counts as...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

Lol, touche. Though the number of encounters is irrelivent, or why they were able to finish them. The point that I was making is that the party should have to NEED to use what they have. If they make it to the end of the day and still have a slew of their abilities left unused, I feel it is my...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

But if it's your 6 (plus a couple hirelings) against 60ish foes (and you've already used your meteor swarms against the 2 adult red dragons and their 5 young dragons you fought earlier that day), would you rather make that eldritch blast guaranteed criticals? Or be able to use a non-bonused...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

But at level 17, wouldnt that be a good thing? Although, I suppose that depends on the DM and the campaign. I like throwing armies at my players where they have to do a lot of damage to a lot of enemies essentially all at once. (And while they can hire or recruit npcs to help, i dont allow them...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

But the nice thing about homebrew stuff is you can do whatever you want with it. :) I'm looking for advice to make it ballanced, but Aco175 can decide to use it but say it's a familiar, while Pdegan2814 can say you chose one die to have at advantage / natural 20.

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

That's why I'm only doing this with cantrips instead of spells (imagine this ability with meteor swarm). Also, it's basically a once a day thing, and doing that takes up most of its power so it can only do another one-three actions, and that's if it even has all its charges, where it might not...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

Why can't an apprentice be powerful? That is an interesting idea making the cloak a familiar. Although it isn't really alive, I just gave it an action of its own to simplify its mechanics, as two of its abilities modify the cantrip, while the other is an extra attack without taking the bonus...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

Ooooooh! Gotcha. Ya, I like saying the enemy at disadvantage, and all their rolls are 1 respectively

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

I like the charge adjustment suggestions (though I'm going back and forth between 6, 7, or 8 on what is e for the last one). As for the abilities, I feel simply saying "all rolls" covers what any cantrip does. To add extra bonuses to the cloak would make it much more powerful than it is...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

Good point, I didn't even think about feats and such. A free action. The point is that the cloak is its own entity acting somewhat independantly. The charges used to bolster your cantrip attack are supposed to be akin to characters assisting eachother. Or perhaps instead of a free action...

D&D 5E Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak

Magic items - The Mage’s Apprentice Cloak and the Master Mage's Cloak I'm planning on giving these to an NPCs which the party needs to defeat, then they can claim the cloaks for themselves. Thoughts? Balance corrections? (Revised versions) The Master Mage's Cloak Wondrous Item, rare...

D&D 5E Magic Items: Conduit Staff and it's lessers

Lol, I have looked at the robe of useful items so many times, yet I dont remember the rod of absorption at all, though surely I MUST have read it at some point. Maybe I was subconciously trying to remind myself about it when I was creating the conduit staff. XP I agree, perhaps it should be a...

D&D 5E Magic Items: Conduit Staff and it's lessers

This version of the staff reminds me of a ring in the DMG. I can see this "staff of spell storing" as being a better version of the ring, but the staff I'm trying to creat is supposed to be used to use the wielder’s prepaired spells, not give new spells. Perhaps they should be two separate...

D&D 5E Magic Items: Conduit Staff and it's lessers

Pointing out the absorbing of spells and the number of spell slots points out a flaw in my explanation. Counter spell needs to use at minimum 3 charges (as it is a 3rd level spell). This is where I forsee the majority of charges being used (especially in my campeigns where I like pitting them...

D&D 5E Magic Items: Conduit Staff and it's lessers

Cast Stored Spell (action). May cast a spell stored within the staff. If you do not know the spell, you are at disadvantage to hit and damage when casting it. Fixed (I think). Thank you for pointing that out. :)

D&D 5E Magic Items: Conduit Staff and it's lessers

I'm making this for a campaign, the main bad guy has a lackey who is using the staff to make new magic items (he wasn't able to perfectly replicate the effects). The party will begin fighting caster with the magic items and hopefully will begin seeking the source so they can't make more. The end...

    D&D 5E Gems of Power

I am organizing and customizing spell gems, power pearls, and elemental orbs. I'm fairly confident about their balance, but what I am struggling with is making it more concise. I am by nature a very wordy person, and have a hard time condensing things. Any help with making these descriptions a...

D&D 5E Magit Item: Guiding Blade

Kind of. I am one of several DMs doing seperate campeigns that affect each other, and I need to pass it by the others to make it cannon in our variant of things. However, while they like the idea, they have their own campeigns, ideas, and actual lives to deal with to prevent them from helping me...

D&D 5E Dwieflings: A New PC Race for a New World

There it is. ;) I am a firm believer that people should be well informed when looking into details and making new variants. What you chose to accept, reject, or alter is purely up to you. At least when it comes to the lore, balancing is something different entirely. Good luck and have fun.
