Your Dicebag and You. What makes a perfect Dicebag

I agree, accept no substitute. I use a strict system of rules, refined over decades of gaming, concerning Crown Royal dice bags. 1. You must first empty the dice bag. 2. A bottle with liquid in it must remain in its bag, for its own protection. 3. Once the bottle can safely be removed...

    DMs: Managing your (4e) combats

You know, this might not be a bad idea at all. I wouldn't set hard and fast rules for this so as not to make the "reset" a tactical consideration for the PCs, but when the DM feels the slog is on, having encounters refresh could be just the thing to ramp up the encounter toward the end game...

Tell me about your D&D group

My current group has been playing together about 5 years. Within that group, my brother and I have been playing together since 1980 and another member of the group has been with us since 1984. Myself, 35 year old professional poker player, my brother and another player are both 34 and are...

What Edition to use? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

Whaaa!? I've already statted out the Drama Giant. Now I'm not going to post it on account of not wishing my frontal lobe bludgeoned.

What Edition to use? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

I love using skill challenges for this sort of thing. Tying such a rich opportunity for a long encounter of roleplaying and strategy to a perform check just seems like such a waste to me. Building a challenge around it, with multiple skills, and the whole party involved is just fun. I...

What do you want? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

D&D's always given me what I wanted, including new editions every 3/4s a decade or so that build on and improve the game. I can add and subtract the nitpicky things from any edition. As long as the current edition is built by gamers, I think the game will be in good hands.

What do you want? I'll tell you something -

I'd say don't look at it as a separate boats in the same current but as separate cabins on the same cruise ship. If you like D&D, you like D&D. Don't divide and partition that community, we're all brothers and sisters. Don't close yourself off from good gaming because you are stuck in one...

    4E DMG Rules Content

It does. It contains a few rules on combat, including aquatic and aerial. Page 42 is an oft quoted page because it contains a table and guidelines on adjudicating any situation that comes up in combat and setting appropriate DCs and damage values for things like knocking an enemy into a...

Non-combat roles in 4E (Was Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target...)

That's the trick, though. All those roles are already melded into the system. Lore is represented by knowledge skills. The wizard likely has the highest scores, but several classes offer a variety of knowledge skills so the need for lore is well covered across most parties in which such...

Non-combat roles in 4E (Was Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target...)

Yeah, I started off to head in that direction, but then kind of lost the point as my mind started wandering about a game of PC magic item merchants. I think you and cadfan are on the right point though, that non combat roles are tenuous to define and not really valid. The traditional roles...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

What would midget want to allow for such considerations as these when they completely defeat his argument? Can't let such things stand in the way of perfectly valid, baseless rants, now can we?

Non-combat roles in 4E (Was Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target...)

Strangely enough, I think you could actually model WoW and other MMOs here. You could design a set of "professions" that the players can improve at, integrate with the magic item creation system (in some cases) and have both work as non combat roles with some usefulness in combat. Smithing...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

Repeating things often doesn't make them true. You continually state this about 4e, yet the PHB opens with a chapter on roleplaying and character building, the DMG has very little actual rules crunch, but a lot on world building, roleplaying, DMing a complete game (including an extensive...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

It did, but not to the extremity you think. Earlier editions - your class defined your character. A thief was not a fighter was not a wizard, but a thief was a thief was a thief. They were all really the same, and didn't account for character much. Esepcially outside of combat. 3rd edition...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

There is no rule #278: Monsters are more than their stat blocks. But their is ample evidence, from the MM and the DMG that this is so. Page 7 of the MM says monsters have healing surges, but very few monsters have a way to spend them in battle, so they are not included in the stat blocks...

    CCF refused D&D donations

Well, if we can get the needy children to play D&D, they will learn the black arts and then they won't be needy; they could simply ensnare CCF workers with their dark magic and take what they want. I smell a new charity!

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

I completely disagree with that. What it adds, is pain in the DMs ass and an huge increase in prep time. Making everything jive on the same power framework was a nice theory (and one new to 3e, it was not this way in previous editions). It was put into the arena and tested, and, imo, failed...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

Andor asked me to quote a page number in the 4e DMG where it stated the DM could houserule. I'm not confusing anything. Encouragement to forego RAW for what works is littered throughout the 4e books. Reflavoring powers, houseruling, making things up on the fly...and various tools exist to...

Adventures with an XP Budget - "Strategic" Play in D&D 4E ?

I care, just missed the thread. I enjoy a game with an emphasis on resource management. My players don't, so I don't get to indulge it often, but there's always OLGs to flex those muscles. I love the idea of tying actual XP rewards to the adventure or encounter as opposed to specifically...
