D&D General Shower Thoughts: If a harpy sings badly on purpose, does her entrancing song still work?

Yeah, I would say that a harpy could turn off the charm if they wanted to. A friendly harpy bard might make an interesting NPC.

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

Even assuming a cleric is available, that's a horrific injury. Even if magic is available, it might be something that spells like Cure Wounds can't cover and requiring Regeneration, which certainly not all clerics have access to. A mid level fighter who fails their save vs fireball often just...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

A RW human caught in a 20 foot radius sphere of fire would almost certainly be horrifically burned. Maybe they could barely dodge it if on the outer periphery, but if caught near the center? Not a snowball's chance in hell. Getting lightly toasted by a fireball is the stuff of action heroes...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

Maybe a level 1 adventure. But higher level adventures? Not likely. IMO, real world people (even capable ones) would likely be maimed or killed by the challenges D&D characters typically face.

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

I doubt it. A stacking -2 to all rolls would get excessive with multiple exhaustion levels, IMO.

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

That sounds right, but I honestly don't recall. I think it's conceivable that they may have changed the cap in the finished version though.

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

I'm guessing it's that stacking -1 (to all rolls and DCs iirc?) that we saw in the play test.

D&D (2024) Regarding the new PHB!

My future future self tells me that the whole "impact the stability of the time stream" thing was based on flawed research. He's having some trouble getting his hands on the books though (long story) so anything you and your future self can share would be appreciated!

D&D General Introducing a Scientific Mindset to Dungeons and Dragons

I said "RW (real world) science doesn't apply". See my earlier post discussing a world constructed of essences rather than our RW natural laws. Certainly the scientific process could be applied to essences as well, but it wouldn't be RW science, meaning that a player's understanding of RW...

D&D General Introducing a Scientific Mindset to Dungeons and Dragons

Yeah, that was my preference as well. Basically "hanging" spells as in the Amber novels.

D&D General Introducing a Scientific Mindset to Dungeons and Dragons

That's fair, although I don't really view "magic can break the rules" as being counter to internal consistency. I was more referring to the idea that if it's been established in the setting that RW science doesn't apply, but then you suddenly introduce firearms that are based on RW science, then...

D&D General Introducing a Scientific Mindset to Dungeons and Dragons

I think there's nothing wrong with basing your setting on the real world and based on science. Gravity based on mass, DNA, and so on. It gives the players a solid basis from which to understand the setting. Although, depending on the players and how much meta the DM permits, this might be...

D&D 5E Players, would you play in a multi-year campaign that used only the 5.1 SRD?

Absolutely. With the caveat that the campaign would have to be pretty good. I've played in lackluster campaigns and still had fun because I enjoyed the character I was playing. Given the restrictions, that's significantly less likely to be the case in this scenario. As such, the campaign itself...

    D&D 5E Using 4e elements for your 5e games?

I refer at creatures at or below half hp as bloodied. I use minions and solos from Flee Mortals, and elites from Level Up. All of them work great.

D&D 5E How would YOU nerf the wizard? +

I would narrow each wizard's focus. There was a great Dragon magazine article back in the day wherein wizards built their spell lists based on the spells they'd already chosen. I think they were called Paths? For example, in order to learn Scorching Ray, a wizard might first have to learn...

    D&D 5E The Magical Martial

I agree. Even going back to OD&D, a high level fighter (say 9th level) could reasonably expect to take on a pack of wolves or multiple bears singlehandedly in melee combat and kill them all (assuming they didn't flee), without any explicit magical aid. That's not something a person could...

D&D General D&D Class Test- Which character class suits you?

Monk and Wizard. I'm a software dev who studied martial arts when I was younger, so I guess that fits.

D&D General What Classes Would You Add to D&D?

Lots of good ideas in this thread. I have offer quite a few additional classes in my games. Most of those are taken from 3pp and then rewritten until I'm completely satisfied with them. The only two of my own design are the Blood Witch (a mix of monk, warlock, and vampire, designed for a solo...

D&D General No Humans? (Well, the players... but that's it.)

By this reasoning, none of us can really RP an adventurer in a fantasy world. The character is clearly nothing more than an "ordinary modern person in a mask". I enjoy the challenge of playing a race with an unusual outlook. Do I do a perfect job? Probably not. Do I have fun with it (and are...
