Lolth and the Temple of Elemental Evil (my players out!) [updated 11/29]

This is also what I recall (dragonsfoot.org I am sure). The discussion came down to it seemed better that Lareth be allied with the Elclavdra types (Elder Elemental god) and be working with the folks in the Temple itself. Gives you a decent hook to move to GDQ once ToEE is completed as well. I...

    D&D 5E Multiclass in 5E

Thanks for the link. That is very unfortunate. Multi-class system in 3e was the worst version for me. I actually preferred the hybrid system introduced in 4e to the 3e system. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope they go with the AD&D after all. 3e system is "dual class", not multi-class.

Archer and Dual Wielder Specialties: What am I missing?

They could have just disallowed bonus damage for off-hand weapons and made the dual wielding option a lot less boring. Maybe even required smaller weapon in off hand and reduce damage by one damage dice size.

    Dual-weapon fighting is extremely lackluster

I read the dual wielding rules and one word came to mind for me. "Boring". Mathematically it might be balanced or whatever but it is really boring and redundant for most gameplay.

    D&D 5E [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

Low stats were a product of Basic D&D, not AD&D.

D&D 5E How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

Actually you can make it compatible with AD&D and still have features of other versions that are worth keeping. Ascending AC and BaB is easily converted for a AD&Der... Stat blocks that are usable is a biggie for me and that means the HP bloat is an issue with newer versions though perhaps they...

D&D 5E How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

I do not want an improvement, I want compatibility with what I play, AD&D. Contrary to what some here might believe there are groups of folk playing AD&D and it's other forms.

D&D 5E How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

To get me to buy "next" product they will need to make it so I can use the product in my AD&D games. Or allow me to use AD&D modules using the "next" system without a huge amount of conversion. Ascending AC/BaB is ok, all the skills/feats/powers is not.

When does D&D stop being D&D?

At 3e the game because less like D&D that I was prepared to play. I cannot really name specific things that make it "not D&D" but a few things stand out to me. DCs, saves and multi-classing. All those things in 3e really changed the game dramatically. Ascending AC, BaB and spontaneous spell...

    Best Initiative System?

I like a simple method. Roll one dice for NPCS and one for PCs (let one player do that) and then whomever got the initiative their side goes, then the other. Much less over head than every single person having their own initiative. With something this simple re-rolling every round isn't a big...

D&D is not a supers game.

I always gave my ogres the bonuses from 18/00 (AD&D). Maybe I was in the minority? I seem to recall it being in modules that way as well (for some at least). It just seemed a bit off. Give the fighter 18 strength and it will be even more skewed. The fight with the ogre seemed to be...

D&D is not a supers game.

Just played another session of #dndnext and one thing I noticed was that an ogre's max damage was less than a 1st level dwarven fighters max damage. The same ogre has a LOT more health (80something) while the fighter was much lower. Something on this scale is out of wack. I lean towards...

D&D is not a supers game.

I do not know about your games but I played into the upper teens and some of them in made it to 20 in AD&D 1e. Game did not break down... infact it was brilliantly fun. NWP are now a complex background? Colour me surprised. The way I suggested allows both you and I have our way. Your way...

D&D is not a supers game.

Character background is what happens between levels one and six. -- Gary Gygax Turn that question around on yourself and see if you can come up with an answer. The solution is to make the kicker a option and not a default, tweak some of the at-will powers and call it done. I'll have to...

    Wisdom too powerful?

I would really prefer they give thieves specific abilities/talent for search/find/etc instead of using wisdom. Same for rangers and tracking. It just does not make much sense for the majority of thiefly abilities (and rangers). Give them a find/remove/search/track talent like earlier editions...

D&D is not a supers game.

I agree that the HP "kicker" at level 1 needs to be removed. While I can appreciate the desire to make level 1 not so deadly... leave that up to the DM. The HP kicker can make some npc encounters laughable, specially the low HD/CR/level/whatever it ends up being. I always liked the older...

The Ogre Killed the Dwarf in 3 Rounds

I think balance is boring. I sense (hope) they learned that from 4e. Frodo's party had to flee even with Gandalf around.

D&D 5E Living Dice Article: "Is It Really D&D Next?"

The skill system is more like the non-weapon profs in 1e/2e. You could use them without spending profs or you could spend profs and get bonuses... and they used ability checks for tasks. The rogue sounds more like 1e/2e thief than the combat advantage/flanking versions. No, it doesn't require...
