Character Idea: Necromancer who wants to convince slaving cultures undead are more effecient

I just had this idea of creating a necromancer character skilled in diplomacy who hates slavery (yeah, raising armies of the undead is just slavery with more steps), and wants to convince slaving cultures the benefits of using undead instead of slaves. Of course, one of this character's obvious...

Your Experience with VTT - Free or Paid?

Neutral. I used Roll20, but one concern is the lack of measurements if you don't use a square or hex grid.

What do you want to do better as a GM?

I want to do something that's part sandbox and runs a little more organically. As I have suggested to another gamer: Here's 3-5 things that are going on, each of them has 3-5 people who know about it, and those people know 3-5 things about the event you're asking about, what do you do?

    New players: your recruiting standards

1.) If you want to be the main character you can FO. 2.) I won't go out of my way to kill characters, but I also won't go out of my way to save you either. After I've reminded you of in game resources three times you're on you're own. 3.) Story is what happens at the table and actions have...

So, I hate pdfs. Any advice on hating them less?

Physical books don't crash. You can spill a drink on your physical book, and it usually still works, unless it's super soaked or something. Page flipping is faster than page number finding. PDFs cannot be damaged or stained with drink, dropped in various places, or have their spines break.

    Gaming Group Struggles

So, there's more than one way to take on a dragon. To take a lesson from HARP, if the players come up with a good plan, let that plan play out. Sure, it's not as exciting as a pitched battle, but it rewards the players for their ingenuity if it works and provides interesting complications if it...

    Gaming Group Struggles

I made sure to read most of the posts and skim the remainder before responding. Why do you need specific niches filled if it's political intrigue over combat? Is there more combat than anticipated? Class as niche isn't what I think's causing the problem here, it's "niche as tactics" as I see it...

Who brings food? The GM or the Players?

I suppose I'll start with the most obvious question to ask about this: where are you playing? Let's assume you're meeting at the GM's house, or one of the other players' homes. In this situation, who brings food depends on agreement, or simply if the host wants to cook, order out, or provide...

The Magic Item Shop: Creative Expression Through Capitalism

My feeling on magic item shops is "if it fits the genre". Final Fantasy CRPG? Sure! World Tree? Absolutely, but they're mostly going to be selling lowish complexity household or professional spells, easy enchantments a first year magical student could do for a term project. D&D or general...

What are your favourite single game mechanics?

Found something I missed in High Adventure Role Playing (HARP) Fantasy as I generally don't give too much thought to the general items list. On the description for the hammer, there's a note that it can be used as -30 mace. As bonuses and penalties tend to be given in 5s (except in difficulties...

What are your favourite single game mechanics?

World Tree . . . succeeding TOO WELL on a skill check can have unforeseen consequences. Not only did you beat the threshold, you beat it by 30 or more. The example given was of a singer entertaining a crowd, who gets potentially unwanted attention from a female in the audience. I like the idea...

When and why did you stop playing D&D and other TTRPGs?

Stopped? I've never really stopped. Long pauses, sure. With the sole exception of D&D: 4e didn't appeal to me in anyway, and while it may not be fair, I see 5e as "damage control" and "too little, too late". Additionally, I came to the point where I asked myself "how many times am I going to buy...

Why do you play games other than D&D?

Having been part of a roleplaying game group in college, I experienced several games, and unfortunately had something of a bad reputation as a D&D supremacist. Although I'm older, I won't claim I have less time to learn new rules. In playing and reading other games, I have come to appreciate...

How Many Actual Sessions Do Your Campaigns Last?

Never actually counted. Actually, I think I've never actually run a campaign to its conclusion. Teenager - quickly shifting interests, Adult - scheduling, boredom with play by post games, losing interest.
