    Challenging assumptions/tactics while giving hints

Not really, though I guess you could say I'm using it against the hypothetical players while giving clues on why things changed. Though I do believe characters should have a basic knowledge of what kinds of creatures live near/around where they start and what their supposed weaknesses are.

    Challenging assumptions/tactics while giving hints

Don't even get me started on running goblin and kobolds as suicidal idiots. 3.x they had average Int and Wis at base, in HARP both goblins and kobolds are noted as being quite smart.

The urban fantasy market seems awfully stagnant

WoD has immersion breaking rules. In order to shoot the guy in the car, my bullet has to succeed in getting through the window first? While I understand what they're aiming for it just seems like too many rolls. d20 Modern was fun, but the base classes were the best case for a traditionally...

    Challenging assumptions/tactics while giving hints

Yes, but even here, there are those who would accuse such and adjustment of being "badwrongfun". Thankfully, in the system I used the example, regeneration isn't fast at all. At absolute best it's 3 HP a minute, not round, so it's not like the trolls are going to regenerate during combat unless...

    Challenging assumptions/tactics while giving hints

I realize that it is often difficult to pretend your character doesn't know what you as a player know. Even the D&D beat-em up video games lampshade this. OK, let's assume that everyone in the game world does know that you have to use fire to prevent trolls from regenerating. Fine, but what if...

3 Favorite Things About Your Favorite System

I'm going to do two systems here, because there's always the question of "Favorite system for what?". Anyway, let's start with generic fantasy/sci-fi. HARP 1. Mixed-races are not presented as full races, they're made either with exactly one or two blood talents or exactly one or two genetic...

Systems You'd Never Play after Reading Them

BTRC's TimeLords 2E (1990) Conceptually, it's nice, does a fair explanation of paradox free time-travel (all time travel is by definition also probability travel so you don't end up in the same place when the Earth isn't in that place and so on). Playing as yourself with various tests to get...

A question on some game systems

Yep, my books are definitely MRQ1.

A question on some game systems

To add to Staffan's answer, there's a reason the system is called RuneQuest. For the default magic system, you need to have a rune for that spell. If you want to cast a more powerful version of that spell, you need more/higher powered runes of the same spell. This makes spells a progression. As...

A question on some game systems

I'm only going to address question #1. While I have not played Runequest, I currently have a few books and while character creation is a little interesting, I really can't get by the way the default magic system works. The version I have is the first edition that Mongoose Publishing put out.

    GM's Knowing the Rules

The GM should be able to keep track of the core of the system in their head. On top of that, they should have notes of where to find the rules for specific other cases that are likely to come up in games, or some method of having those rules easily accessible in another form: screen, notebook...

How much do you care about "balanced" dice?

Lanefan I would never destroy a die that has been rolling poorly for me, though I do "ground" dice that continue to fail me sometimes. Even though the grounding period may be over, some still haven't hit a table, if only because I'm not playing in person as much.

    Vampire's new "three-round combat" rule

The MST3K Mantra may have worked when I was a teenager, but now, as an adult, if the world is not consistent it pulls me out of my suspension of disbelief. OK, fine, I can agree, that somehow, all across the multiverse, they use the same four metals for currency. When all those planets have the...

Podcast #43: Why is D&D So Popular?

It seems more popular than it may actually be because it’s the RPG everybody knows about. Not saying it isn’t popular, just that the volume of that popularity could be skewed, in some cases by not explaining that you are playing another RPG.

    Vampire's new "three-round combat" rule

You get there in the next part of your response I quoted, but I do have a problem with this from both the PCs side and the enemy's side. In addition to always fighting to the death being downright stupid, it makes me think of "always X" alignment races. 1. How does an Always Chaotic Evil race...

    Vampire's new "three-round combat" rule

While not quite the same as the three round combat, in Sentinels Comics RPG (which is based on Fate Accelerated, I think), combat is timed. There are only so many rounds until the combat is over, regardless of who has the upper hand. What happens when the last round is over depends on how close...

How to deal with death in RPG?

I'm well aware of the mental gymnastics by which one could classify Monopoly as a role playing game.

How to deal with death in RPG?

I think in some ways, some people are forgetting the “game” part of “role playing game”. Sure, I spend time on characters and grow attachments. That said, some of the most fun memories have come from losing those characters and not by my choice. I will sometimes give a GM a way of saving my...

    Why the hate for complexity?

I think the "barrier to entry" idea is on point. At the same time, some of us want that barrier to entry, not to keep new players from gaming but as a form of gate keeping to discourage players whose interest level or playstyle would not be welcome in a group from trying to join that group.

Schools of Magic, Bardic Colleges, and What Those Terms Actually Mean

Long story short: word have meaning X in the real world, in D&D those same words have meaning Z.
