    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

I haven't tried the weaponmaster, I have a feeling that as more maneuvers come out, there will be some tactical genius who can treat armies of goblins and orcs like in The Hobbit as their plaything.

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

When I play a wizard, I'm fine with it, because it makes sense that not every explosion will kill everyone in the blast radius. This is borne out by real life data on bombs in crowded areas (sadly). Magic missile is akin to a heat-seeking missile, which is tech / magic so again, I'm fine with...

D&D 5E Do We Need Another "Damage On A Miss" Poll?

I came across to original Reaper poll from the first packet, which had 64% say believability was OK and balance was OK, and that was in march, or may? Anyway the numbers are now showing the opposite. I bet you any money if they polled people using a clear question : do you find this believable...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

In a game world with illusion spells, polymorph, and druids, it stands to reason that a king jealously guarding state secrets would tell his guards to not even let animals through the gates. Also, NPCs and even monsters like ogres, gaining fighter levels is something Mearls said was something...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

I'm a coder, and I use abstraction every day of my professional life. I know what I'm talking about: abstraction The process of picking out (abstracting) common features of objects and procedures. A programmer would use abstraction, for example, to note that two functions perform almost the...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

If they re-introduced Touch AC, that'd work. I'd rather it went : if you miss with your attack, but still beat their touch AC (10 + dex + magic), then that miss becomes a hit that deals 1d6 damage (no str mod). Simple, clean, balanced. Still keeps the agency of the dice, but allows that 2 HP...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

Ahh, dude, you realize that the wizard still rolls dice for fireball damage, then it's halved on a successful save, right? The agency of the dice is still there. This mechanic doesn't even allow damage to be variable. It's hard-coded to your str mod. I'm not sure any wizard spell allows this...

D&D 5E I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Weren't rounds in 1e a minute long? They are 6 seconds long in Next, and 1 attack = 1 attack, otherwise you'd be doing damage every time your swing was "parried", multiple times per "attack"

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

It's not really the same thing though, for Aoe spells, like Fireball, that engulf entire areas and your character is definitely inside those areas. I defy anyone in the midst of a massive explosion to not even get a single scratch on them, even a bruise or a scrape from some debris. Weapons...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

Thank you for your critiques. What are some of the things that I've missed from this forum? I want to make a solid, comprehensive list. 18 is really the number 1 for me though, I don't like that the dice have less chance of altering the specific round # a foe is killed in, later in the battle...

It's not obvious to Rodney Thompson, obviously :)

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

Indeed. The definition of HP is irrelevant to the phrase "When I miss you with my sword my sword damages you" People use the word abstraction incorrectly, to allow HP's abstraction to "abstractify" by proxy the words that are used around it. If one attempts to narrate the effect of this...

D&D 5E I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

I hope y'all don't mind, I will cross-post my objections to GWF here to compare with what this forum has already brought up (some of which are in my list already): I've compiled a list of problems with GWF and damage-on-a-miss over at Wotc forums: Hello forum, I've compiled a list here of...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

I've compiled a list of problems with GWF and damage-on-a-miss over at Wotc forums: Hello forum, I've compiled a list here of problems with Great Weapon Fighting style, which I will now quote: Great Weapon Fighting When you miss a target with a melee weapon that you are wielding...

    D&D 5E "Damage on a miss" poll.

Sounds like you don't like the way the poll is turning out, and have an agenda (not very hidden, it's clear you want it to stay, just be honest about it) I detest damage on a miss too, and also have a strong reaction to any game where that type of confusing mechanic is forced on us, front and...
