What percent of your 4e parties have an Expertise feat?

I think it's at 3 between four parties. Two have it in the 17th level group, and I think a third is planning on it. In the 9th level group, I'm pretty sure the warlock grabbed it. So far, none in the 6th level group. The 2nd level group is also none, unless the hammer-wielding warden just...

Do you hand out less treasure?

I've been giving out less. One of the campaigns I run is using the WotC modules, and those provide far less than what would be expected- typically five items when the range of levels would suggest 12-16, and about 1/3 the expected cash. I did figure out what the expected amount would be, and...

Forked Thread: Miniatures - planning encounters

I find it very satisfying to be able to set something on the table and say, "That's what you see." So, yeah, I do design encounters in part around what I have. It's not a total limiter, but it is something I keep in mind. I've also been running the WotC modules. Before sessions, I look over...

    Trolls!

Technically yes. I opted for the interpretation that fire could be applied after- still needed a hit, would still take an action. I felt if I required the hit that took the troll down to 0 be acid/fire, I'd end up with part of the party twiddling their thumbs, waiting for a fire user to step up...

    Trolls!

The wizard in the group I ran Trollhaunt for was big on fire spells; scorching burst, fire shroud, fire burst (? it was a Burst 2 encounter). The fighter ended up with the acid/poison sword. The cleric had an old flaming maul to pull out. Only the strikers didn't have a ready source of flame. I...

    Parrying Dagger Question

Well, yeah. My point was, a spiked shield could get a weapon enchant, so would be a weapon. A regular shield is not eligible, so doesn't count as a weapon. The more I think about it, the more I want to get inside the player's head. He's a paladin with a shield, he should have the highest AC in...

    Parrying Dagger Question

I don't think shields are technically weapons. Spiked shields, sure, but I don't think you can get a +2 Flaming Shield. On the other hand, he's spending a feat to get +1 AC and a d4 weapon. If he wants a character that sucks that much, I guess I'd allow it. I do recall the dagger-wielding rogue...

    SPOILER: Question about Thunderspire Labyrinth

It's been a while, but I think the duergar drew first. The PCs came in asking too many questions, and the duergar decided to nip the problem in the bud. It did not go so well for them, and the mages decided to stay out of it for the time. It did help matters that the entire party died in the...

    sword mage question !

His interpretation is backed up by the FAQ posted by the company that publishes the game. Now, WotC has made mistakes before so I'm not saying that it is 100% certain that his is the way it should be done, but having the publishers weigh in on his side sure seems like it should make his...

He did back it up- with a quote from the FAQ.

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

Too many problems with implementation. Just off the top of my head, how do you stop someone going into the bookstore and writing down the code? They go home and use it, and the person who actually buys the book finds their code invalid because it's already in use.

Anyone else not feel "the grind"

This- some of the dailies got used upstairs, others just missed the bad guy's high defenses. End of Thunderspire also went long, as most of the room had an effect that would daze the PCs, and couldn't help but hit their Will defense. A few fights have gone way long as dice go bad- when no one...

Buck Rogers XXVc wasn't that bad a game.

Matrix Cubed was the other. I remember having a lot of fun with Countdown. Played like the D&D goldbox games, except sci-fi with a skill system. I guess part of why I was so accepting of Star Wars coming out using basically the same rules as D&D was because I'd already seen (earlier) D&D rules...

    Druid Wild Shape

They're still getting the armor bonus, right? Then yeah, they're still getting the penalty. Might not be clanking, but they'd probably be moving stiffly or something.

Paladin Hospitaler vs Beholder Death Tyrant

Yeesh! Does every paladin paragon get a killer mark upgrade? I've got a Champion of Order in one game I run, and he gets to daze and weaken a creature as long as he keeps his mark active; it's come close to destroying some solo monsters, and defanged a few elites. As RangerWickett said, best...

    Druid Wild Shape

PCs and monsters work differently. In this case, these are PC powers that aren't weapon based; without the proficiency bonus, the usual case is to target a defense other than AC.

    Would racial power lists work?

There are actually some powers in Martial Power that work this way; one off the top of my head lets the fighter give an ally a +4 AC bonus, or +5 if the fighter is a dragonborn (most of the feats are also race specific). I do wish we got to see more racial stuff. Early previews seemed to...

Wait, what? PC is writing a Dungeon adventure?

Neat! I'll be looking forward to that (12? Just have to survive for 4.5 more levels...)

    Resistance: Variable

From MM p 282, "The monster gains the specified amount of resistance to the chosen damage type for the rest of the encounter... If a monster can use this ability more than once per encounter, it can resist only one type of damage from this ability at a time." It's not an interrupt, so the...
