How to Win a D&D Tournament

I'm a HUGE fan of tournaments (as my collection of tournament modules can attest to). :) I always fit in a tournament in my GenCon schedule.

    Which Hackmaster Stuff to Use

You know...you should really give the critical hit charts a 2nd chance. Between penetration damage and the critical hits chart, it really adds A LOT to the combats.

Gencon Follies: My boiling point (rant/question)

I understand your frustrations, because for years, I railed against GenCon for their IT problems and inability to resolve them. I realized that I was beating a dead horse. I might as well accept that there will be problems, and try not to get frustrated over them. I know it...

Gencon Follies: My boiling point (rant/question)

Nah...I'm still on the boards. For a long time, I was very active in posting my criticisms and suggestions. I'm just not vocal about it anymore. I can post advice until I'm blue in the face...but if noone is listening, it doesn't help much. I COULD be proven wrong, and they have fixed...

Merric's view: Thoughts on the Digital Initiative.

FATHEAD'S THOUGHTS ON THE DIGITAL INITIATIVE: I believe that what they'll propose will be radically different than simply offering something like Dragon magazine and Dungeon magazine online. I believe that they will create a peer production application (think of some strange combination of web...

    Recommend a Dungeon Crawl Classic?

I'll 2nd the suggestion to jump on the GoodmanGames forums and read some of the stories posted by people running the modules. For that matter, read over the modules, decide which ones appeal to you (based on the descriptions alone), and then post on the Goodman forums about some specifics...

What to do with a party that keeps dying?

I'll be honest...I only skimmed some of the response here, so if I'm making a suggestion that someone else already made, I apologize. If the group is short on combat strategy, you can do it the hard way and keep pummelling them until they figure it out...but the easiest way it probably just to...

This wouldn't be for the Dungeon Crawl Classics tournament, would it? ;)

    A Question About Eric Noah

Eric Noah is a myth on par with Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. ENWorld was supposed to be "InWorld", but they spell words funny in England...and so, ENWorld was born.

Gonna Buy Some New Adventures. Suggestions Please.

DCC 12.5 Iron Crypt of the Heretics. The module lacks a unifying them unless you purchased The Blackguards Revenge, but with a few modifications, you can easily fit it into a campaign (and the module provides a few suggestions on how to do that). I ran this as a one-shot adventure, and my...

    Tournament style adventures

I was browsing some of the threads about Necromancer going out of business, and it got me thinking about "tournament style" adventures - ones with interesting locales, strategic combats, puzzles, riddles, etc. I rarely purchased published modules, but when I do they tend to fall into that...

Have fantasy novels gotten "better" since D&D?

I believe that fantasy, in general, is more widely accepted. I think we find more gems, simply because more writers are willing to enter the field. I would say that the same goes for sci-fi as well. However, I'd wouldn't necessarily say "better"...in both fantasy and sci-fi, there are some...

    Taking 20 Too Often

Keep in mind - disarming magical traps only bypasses it for a certain amount of time. If they disarm it and then spend an hour combing the room, it will reset itself. You can also put more time pressure on them with wandering monsters, guards, etc.

Dungeon Crawl Classics - like 'em?

Quite a few modules have that "end boss" scenario, no matter who the publisher is. I'd also venture to say that A LOT of the classic adventures had that. The DCC has several in the line that don't follow that description (despite what their tag line says). For example: Crypt of the Iron...

Dungeon Crawl Classics - like 'em?

I'm a big fan of the tournament modules, but that's probably because it's exactly what I'm looking for out of a dungeon crawl - good descriptions, drawings to accompany some of the descriptions, puzzles, riddles, traps, great combats, and interesting locales. I generally run the DCCs as a...

Dungeon Crawl Classics - like 'em?

In that case, definitely check out the GoodmanGames website, if you haven't already...I'm fairly certain that Halls of the Minotaur has been completely mapped out in Dunjinni. Halls of the Minotaur came with the boxed set, right? I don't have that yet, but I've heard good things about it.

Dungeon Crawl Classics - like 'em?

I've enjoyed the DCC adventures. I only infrequently run published modules (and usually only for a gaming weekend with friends), but when I do, I pick up a DCC. I own several of them. My favorites are the tournament modules - Crypt of the Devil Lich, Vault of the Dragon Kings, and Palace in...

    Most fun adventure?

For my weekly campaign, I always write my own adventures...but any of the Goodman Games Dungeon Crawl Classics tournament modules rank among my favorites (Crypt of the Devil Lich, Vault of the Dragon Kings, and Palace of the Waste). They're a great combination of dungeon crawl, puzzles, traps...

Need help - ideas for a chase on horseback!

I hope that this discussion will generate some great ideas. I've been cobbling together a new campaign, and the premise is this - an artifact which helped to maintain the balance of power has been stolen. The PCs are travelling through neighboring kingdoms, following the trail of the thief...

Books on Room Puzzles, Enigmas and Traps

I've flipped through some of Cloud Kingdoms stuff, and liked what I saw. There is also a book of traps called Lethal Legacies (I think Goodman Games puts this out). But, if you're looking for a set of traps, riddles, and puzzles all in an adventure, I would highly recommend one of Goodman...
