    PF2 and the adventure day

I've come to believe it's unfair to try to evaluate PF2 as needing to compete with 5E. I don't view 13th Age or SotDL as needing to compete with 5E, why should PF2 need to be viewed that way? PF2 probably had the barest minimum of actual playtesting, their design team was on their heels from...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Second Edition: I hear it's bad - Why Bad, How Bad?

I do think this is something Paizo did right to try to hide some of the 4E "per encounter" mechanics - a number of mechanics that take 10 minutes to reset or apply are effectively encounter powers if the DM allows enough time to rest between encounters.

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Second Edition: I hear it's bad - Why Bad, How Bad?

So far most of the players I know who have used shields at any point are more likely to pick a 2H weapon just because they don't want to deal with the mental tax of playing the "shield mini-game" ~ I'm not sure if there's an alternate rule buried in there for "Simplified Shield Rules" where a...

    Is Pathfinder 2 Paizo's 4E?

I ask myself -- What is "Paizo"? Is it the guys who penned great stuff like Age of Worms back in the days of Dungeon? And then great stuff like Rise of the Runelords? If it's the actual human being with the creative idea, and the stat blocks to implement it... take some of the parts of Age of...

    Pathfinder 2E Here's A Pathfinder 2E Goblin

I can see why some folks are feeling like it's 4E again when they look at the PF2E Bestiary. A lot of the negative reaction that gamers who continued onto Pathfinder 1E after D&D 3.5E had was due to it feeling more like a video game than a TTRPG. A lot of the PF2E evokes a more...

    Is Pathfinder 2 Paizo's 4E?

Ah, I think this reads into the current state of Paizo too much. Paizo's lost a ton of their talented creative personnel who helped them reach their peak - Wes Schneider, James Sutter, Sean K Reynolds, Crystal Frasier, etc. Outside of Jacobs and Bulmahn they lost most of their folks who had...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Second Edition: I hear it's bad - Why Bad, How Bad?

Based on theorycrafting after receiving the final book in the chats we have, very few folks are talking about shields in anything they want to build. There's a lot of building going on with the Fighter chassis "multi-classing" into a magic class, where folks are planning on using auto-scaled...

    Any good sandbox module published?

If you want a mega sandbox, check out "Wilderlands of High Fantasy". If you want something more accessible, check out the "Vault of Larin Karr". You'd want PCs that are able to self-motivate in a true sandbox where they can freely choose to move from Point A to Point B on the map at any given...

    Is Pathfinder 2 Paizo's 4E?

If I could go back and time and get the hours back from 2/3rd of the 4E games (1/3rd I'm sure had funny non-rules related hijinx), I probably would. The most competitive gamers we played with in the 4E era regularly used 3 powers per turn by converting a move action into a 2nd minor action and...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Second Edition: I hear it's bad - Why Bad, How Bad?

With some folks having received their PF2E Core book here, we're at the crossroads where those folks who sprung the $60 want to give it a spin and others who didn't enjoy the Playtest requiring convincing. A muster for a 2nd level table of PF2E is certainly better than PF1E would be in terms of...

    Is Pathfinder 2 Paizo's 4E?

I'm simply relating the assessment of multiple gaming groups. You might not see the "3 action economy" of 4E and 3E but many local alpha players among my gaming groups fully optimized for it, particularly Turn 1 and Turn 2 action budgets. Just to show I'm not picking on 4E, which was basically...

    Is Pathfinder 2 Paizo's 4E?

Having played all the editions, I have to say PF2E is the closer to 4E than it is to 1E/2E, 3E or 5E. The more PF2E is played, the more it feels like 4E. I haven't gotten to play the final PF2E version yet (there's local resistance in doing so) but it doesn't look much different than the...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Second Edition: I hear it's bad - Why Bad, How Bad?

I played PFS during its peak, over 300 tables at 6 different game stores and at least 6 different convention venues, so have probably seen at least 1000 different players come and go. More often than not there was a huge disparity between characters, almost always at the lower levels (1st...

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Core Set: A Review

In terms of cost, a lot of the ACG games are available for pretty good deals these days... 50% off being the average if you poke around (aka $9 for a $19 pack). My FLGS put almost all Paizo products on clearance at 50-75% off. Online you can use eBay and usually find complete sets for ~$50...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Second Edition: I hear it's bad - Why Bad, How Bad?

After skimming through the final rules, it looks like Paizo is going after the same kinds of player-minds that subsidized 4E sales. They aren't trying to build a comparable product to 1E-3E & 5E. These rules aren't likely to win over your average group. Most groups I'm familiar with in my...

    Is Pathfinder 2 Paizo's 4E?

I suspect PF2e has some internal design goals that aren't intended to be made public. Their business model really requires addiction level subscribers to commit to the year-plus subscription model and the predictable revenue of 5000-15,000 gamers parting with $50 a month or ~$600-1000 of annual...

Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!

Too much friction on making this purchase... Funny the first time I clicked on the site McAfee wouldn't let me go through (I imagine it's because kingmakercampaign.com isn't available via HTTPS and only HTTP). Once I added the exception I was a bit surprised it was $50 for a PDF. Usually a...

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?

Well, I'm down to play Fate anytime... As I read the PF2 Playtest, I didn't feel like it was be presuming a more legendary tone than it's 1e, 2e or 3e forebears (or its 5e cousin). The page and a half of Legendary Feats where most were a few lines ("Your swim speed is equal to your land...

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?

To be clear, I very much adored the 3e/PF1 era of D&D. Every edition is different and this one had some staying power, which is why I followed it to PF1 vs 4e. Different editions of D&D play differently, but what we remember decades later are the stories we told more than anything else - the...

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?

My sorcerer player just went through this during character creation. In his 3e incarnation, his bloodline was Infernal, which he was able to realize with just the PF Core book as it shipped with 10 bloodlines. In 5e with just the PHB and Xanathar's available (twice as many books!) he only had...
