    D&D 5E Cantrip house rule

For those DMs that think cantrip damage is overpowered, consider this house rule: Damage inflicted by a cantrip is equal to the caster's proficiency die. Too restrictive? Allow the caster to expend a spell slot to empower him- or herself and thus use the current RAW. This empowerment lasts for...

Has anyone significantly house-ruled or altered the 5E skill system? Care to share?

Thanks for the replies, folks. As for my own game, I'm tinkering with the idea of eliminating variable difficulty numbers and using a roll-under-a-fixed-rating mechanic, with easier or harder tasks having advantage or disadvantage. It's not fully developed and needs playtesting...but the seed...

Help--what's this game or game setting?

Thank you all for the suggestions and for trying to help. Sadly, I do not believe that it is any of the games mentioned so far. The game I'm inquiring about is an indie game, I think, or it is perhaps based on the BRP system; it is not a core rules set. I'm still looking. I've combed through my...

Help--what's this game or game setting?

I read a game setting the other day and can't find it again. It was a dark fantasy setting, Iron Age technology, with two forms of magic that are opposed and mutate their wielders. The magic wasn't good vs. evil, but more order vs. chaos. I don't know if it used RQ6 or some other rules set...

Roll to Level Up Advancement Rules

Here's my take on an alternate XP system for D&D Fifth Edition. After reading it, I would welcome constructive criticism, especially about new or refined XP categories. I've blended together the idea of Aspects (from FATE/Fudge), Keys (from The Shadow of Yesterday) and a roll to level up idea...

    Tree shaping spell?

Can anyone recall if there any spells that allow a caster to shape a living tree? I'm having no luck finding anything in the mountain of pdfs I have access to.

Specialization in 5E: Proposed House Rule

If you are a powergaming min-maxxer, then I guess it would seem to be most effective to dump it all into one implementation. I find powergaming min-maxxers to be just awful. If you are interested in developing a character in a roleplaying game that is not centred solely around combat, then it's...

Specialization in 5E: Proposed House Rule

Revised version, after some playtesting: For each level your character has, you may allot 1 Customization Point. Customization Points may be spent to buy certain bonuses for your character, subject to GM approval: [*=1]add +1 to a specific implementation of a skill (i.e., “skill...

Proposed tweak to Sharpshooter and GWM

Limiting its use to once per round is fair. For it to be used a second time in the same round you might require that the conditions of the first bullet point listed under Great Weapon Master be met first.

D&D 5E How do you adjudicate firing through combatants?

LabyrinthLord's is the simplest and perhaps best way to handle it: You aim, hold your shot a moment too long, interrupt your instincts to release the shot lest you hit your ally, or whatnot, and that adds up to disadvantage. On a 1 (typically the anti-natural 20 for most D&Ders) you hit...

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

I chose "advantage" as the simplest way to emulate the high damage and/or armor piercing quality of crossbows at short range rather than fiddling with numerical bonuses or some sort of AC discounting. Both of your suggestions could work as alternate rules. I just wanted something relatively...

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

Correct. I have changed the word "actions" to "attacks" to refine for clarity. Thank you.

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

No, I am not. Reread my original post for clarification.

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

No, I am proposing that you allow common sense to govern rules adjudication so that the "spirit of the law" trumps the "letter of the law."

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

This is already the case for ranged weapons with the "Loading" quality. See page 147 of the PHB.

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

Common sense first. If you allow common sense to govern rules interactions, there is no problem at all. A rogue's sneak attack ability should come into play typically when sneaking, stealth, or surprise is involved, not because of the stopping power of a weapon.

    Spicing up bows and crossbows.

Some ideas to spice up bows and crossbows: Weapon classification: long bows and hand crossbows are martial weapons. Light and heavy crossbows are simple weapons, as are short bows. Initiative: using a ranged weapon attack against a foe that is not an immediate melee threat to you (i.e., the...

    D&D 5E Cure Disease Spell?

Perhaps my eyes are not working correctly, but I cannot find a cure disease spell in the new PHB. Is there such a spell, or its equivalent?
