Ack (help figuring out weapon bonuses)

Thanks! I see now how that makes sense. I understood that they meant a weapon with the "high crit" property and stuff, but the bonus thing after that made no sense. I spent a long time reading the PHB but it's so confusingly organized (I kept seeing [W] pop up, but wasn't explained it till way...

Ack (help figuring out weapon bonuses)

I've been playing 4e (well, D&D in whole) for only a few months now, also with a bunch of beginners, so if I sound ignorant blame it on my noobishness. Anyways, I've been trying to figure out how 2d4 is somehow better than 1d8, until I read about magic weapons. So a +2 longsword adds +2 to...

So, what gaming gifts are you giving (or asking for)?

Draconomicon maybe. Martial Powers? idk, I think the other players in the group would complain that their classes don't get a book like that

100 ways to know that you're a roleplayer!

My girlfriend mentioned the GM at her work and I was like "You guys RP at your work?" she asked what the hell I was talking about, and I said "you told me you have a game master" "no stupid, general manager!" :(

    Problem player in my group

I have a feeling it will, because his behavior seems highly compulsive. Because if he thought beforehand about how much throwing a fit will benefit the group, I doubt he'd do it.

DND 4E Is different! (Why is that bad?)

I agree. I think what makes people think 4e is so limited is the way it's structured. It takes thought to be able to see the vast variety of options you have in 4e, but when you manage it can make for a great payoff.

    The Opposite of Rail-roading

I think you give them too much open-ness. You should give them a sense of direction. Let's use real life as an example. Yes, in real life you can go around doing anything you damn well please, but if something appeals to you more than something else, it's probably what's going to be on your...

    Station Squatting (Player Railroading)

I don't understand this. Is this the player's unwilling to go on a quest the DM wrote up? How is that such a bad thing? If the party doesn't want to do it, why does the DM have to force the players into it? Isn't THAT railroading?

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

So you could make magical handguns to the same effect then, right?

    We fight monsters sometimes.

If you put it that way, EVERY encounter should have a backup plan. The problem with adventuring is whenever you find that gargantuan ancient dragon, more likely than not you're playing on HIS turf. Which means less planning options. The only thing you have left really is forcing him to fight on...

How Are your Books Holding Up?

My DMG is fine, monster manual is okay (a little crappy because CERTAIN PEOPLE can't quite grasp the concept of respecting property that isn't yours) and my PHB is smudged to hell. Whatever. As long as they still serve their purpose.

    We fight monsters sometimes.

Well, let's get back to the fantasy aspect of the game. Having 4 other people with you, and assuming that at least one of them can shoot magic out of their face, the fight becomes a little bit easier. Maybe even child's play. Add on to that the fact that you take control of a hero, more than...

4e modules and lack of empty space

Too much space gets boring, the lack of becomes predictable and kind of stale. I think an adventure, however, should have whatever it is the party is looking for, if they want the space and tension, go for it. If they get bored with it, don't bother.

Newer DM needs advice on Dungeon tiles

This. I opted for a battlemat, and must say it's much funner to use (though as said before, can be a little slow in drawing out surprise encounters)

    We fight monsters sometimes.

I see your point, but I'd like to say as someone who enjoys hunting in real life, D&D had to change the mechanic to make it playable. You don't have to dig a deep pit to kill a bear, and in fact I doubt they're that stupid to fall in. All you have to do to kill it is hit it in it's vitals...

    New fiendish DMing quirk

Same. I'd get my ass chewed out for pulling something like that, probably noting that they'd ALL go say hi to the cow and get sploded.

    Are you a "problem player"?

I don't think I am normally, however I do debate with the DM a lot (when I'm not DMing) probably because the DM sucked (ah, railroading. As in not being able to make any decisions outside of the battlemat railroading) but I can't help but feel I would've done that to any other DM. Probably not...

    Problem player in my group

He sounds like he has a persistent personality, in which case any number of discussions you have to address his behavior will end up null. Booting friends sucks, I know cuz I had to do it, but sometimes it's necessary. Your group should decide it together, though, and tell him you gave him fair...
