D&D 5E The Bard's Combat Inspiration is Messed Up

"I rolled a 16, does that hit?" "I use Combat Inspiration.... my AC is.... 17. No it does not." "Ok." Let the players manage their own stats.

So What's In The New DM Screen?

At first I was like... where's the combat stuff? Then I was like... oh yeah, 5th edition doesn't have a huge chest of combat stuff you'd need a screen for. Ad and Disad isn't screen-worthy. Then I was like... actually... that's kinda cool stuff to have for winging it and telling stories. I'm...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Rageblood Armor Question

In other cases, there's differences to contrast why they are different. I pointed out Warden abilities, and I pointed out powers that grant secondary attacks. I'm trying to get a solid argument from you why Rageblood would act as the former and not the latter, even tho it is templated and...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Rageblood Armor Question

An action granted by the original power's original use. It's not using a power, because there's no power being used. You're allowed to because the original power says you can as part of the effect. Specific beats general, yo. The action doesn't have a title, doesn't need one, because it's...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Rageblood Armor Question

Prove it. Find the errata'd version of that power, and show the MRP of that power, including the power block that it uses, with its keywords. You keep saying it's a power, and the only way to settle it is to show the printing of that power. Someone else did in this thread, and instead it...

D&D 5E The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

The former's ability to detect is not affected--positively or negatively--by torches, and the latter would logically not be able to deal with an amount of light that is completely alien to it. I mean hell, people live in the daylight and staring at something as ubiquitous as the sun hurts. It...

D&D 5E The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

I was thinking something along the line of using ambient light, being creative with the resources that you can find down there. Yes, you're at a disadvantage when you're out of your element--this is a test of your creativity. I'd be looking for glowing lichen. In lieu of that, I'd be looking...

D&D 5E Woo Hoo, Invisibility Stopped It's Downward Spiral

Detectable != easily detectable. If you're not stealthing you aren't TRYING to be undetected. Itd probably still apply disadv to Perception checks to find you.

D&D 5E No Armor: Addiing Proficiency to AC

Classes designed around heavy armor [paladins, clerics] will languish. They will be playing catch-up the entire game, until finally, at level 20, they have the AC of a level 1 character in most games. Classes designed around finesse or ranged weapons, on the other hand, will start with...

D&D 5E The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

You could take the time to research how people used to scout and see at night in times before IR goggles and such. A sufficiently low-tech solution should work for you. I mean... people did get around our lack of darkvision back in the day. If 'make a deal with the demons' isn't an option...

D&D 5E Elves, Wizards, Sorcerers, Charisma

High elves get their cantrip through a long life of studying that magic, which is why it is based on their intellect and has to be a wizard cantrip. They have no inherent talent for rejiggering magic as it is cast, no relation to dragons, and the notion of wild-magic seems to be counteractive...

D&D 5E Is it possible to have a good-aligned final boss in a good campaign?

Good vs Good can absolutely be a conflict. Think of the conflict between 'Law and Chaos', where a great unifier could be reacting to a wilderness filled with monsters and brigands and dark dark things, and bringing everything under one unifying hammer, but the players happen to be part of an...

D&D 5E Light Weapon Question, Grapple Question

The attack bonus works off melee. A finesse weapon MAY use dexterity instead, but they are not required to do so. Armor one is proficient in does not affect any attack rolls or ability checks in any way, with the exception of Stealth. There is nothing to fix. As a grappler: Use a dagger...

D&D 5E Humans, am I missing something? And what's up with half-elf skill bonus?

Given that the goal of this game, stat wise, is to get to an even number to make the boost to 20 easy as possible, there are times where a +2 is not better than a +1. If you have a 15 in a stat, the highest available, a +1 is just as good.

D&D 5E Heavy Armour Master, how does a front liner survive without it?

If you're getting 30 damage incoming per round, the utility of this feat depends on if that 30 damage is done through 5 attacks compared to one. In the case of the former, you took 15 damage. In the latter, you took 27. Doesn't seem like the same utility at all.

D&D 5E how would it hurt to take a diffrent class sub class

Different classes can, for various reasons, have a different number of spells known. It may be because of the schools of magic involved as a balance lever. Minor Illusion, Friends, and Mage Hand aren't as effective in combat as Fire Bolt and Blade Ward.

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Rageblood Armor Question

No, it's a rage attack. For it to be a use of a rage power, it has to, explicitly, be a specific POWER. Secondary Attacks are not, and have never been, themselves powers. For example, if you have a ranger attack power that has Attack, a Secondary Attack, and a Tertiary Attack, you did not...

D&D 5E I'm feeling really good about 5E, but where to from here?

I'm thirsty for more options--more archtypes, backgrounds, and even a few more classes. So long as these things are used to bolster imaginative characters I'm all for it. Power level concerns, however--I'm of the opinion that certain kinds of 'options' like 'math fix feats' and such should go...

D&D 5E How do you handle casting spells underwater?

I have no problem with fireballs or lightning underwater as being fire or lightning or cold or whatever it is. The reason's simple--If evocation magic can displace air with fire, it can displace water with fire. It's magic--it breaks the rules of nature. It's also consistant--you evoke fire...
