Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I guess that is a to each their own type of thing then. I don't at all mind playing in a campaign or adventure that is intended to be wholly in one city/fief/country/domain. If I bought into that premise, then yeah. But again, run it how you feel. And if you are offered a game that doesn't play...

D&D 5E It's Official! Most of my encounters are "Deadly" (now updated with info through the end of 2022!)

I am right there with ya. I never look at the difficulty of my encounters. It just has become a fine art of eye-balling it, or whether the encounter makes sense. Plus, in my defense, my players have a tendency to announce their presence and make encounters harder for themselves. "Should we...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I mean... you can still run Ravenloft as you'd like. (Barring any AL stuff as that is the only time I can think you'd HAVE to be true to whatever meta is going on). Personally, the isolated domains is always how I pictured and ran Ravenloft. When I first discovered that lore that people could...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

As I stated. I have played in much older editions. I don't really see this difference that people keep saying is there. I don't think anyone is really more of a zero than another due to edition, because the expectations on the monster side are also different. What's more, that bottom paragraph...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

None of what you said helped me understand further. Either you lose me with jargon, or you are just further describing games I have ran or played in. Combat as war is not IMO unique to OSR. And the only times I may have fudged rolls as DM is if I realized I made a mistake on my end. Either...

D&D General What Product Do You Wish They Sold For D&D

Not familiar for sure. Is that the Matt Coville or something one? I'll take a gander regardless.

    D&D General First D&D Character?

My first was a 3.x Ranger that I ended up going arcane archer with. He was out for wealth, glory, and the perks those two things bring with it. Probably not a typical motivation for a ranger, but hey... I was in like high-school. It was a very sandbox adventure, and really, I don't think there...

D&D General What Product Do You Wish They Sold For D&D

I some nice mass combat rules. I can come up with my own, or use the UA ones, or a mish-mash of both. I am not entirely happy with those results though, and I haven't had the time, and frankly, the will to perfect them to my satisfaction. Maybe having those more codified wouldn't make me happy...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

I think my whole confusion about OSR boils down to this. I have always played with Rulings over rules, both as player and DM. Danger has always been a part of the game. -RIP My very first Ranger.- And outside of a couple of particular people who made books as backgrounds, we were zero to hero...

D&D General Do you care about lore?

Fun to read, but everyone that I ever have much repeat play with (outside of some AL exceptions) runs homebrew. Lore ultimately ends up feeling like it is in the way whenever I have tried to run an AP or even just run a campaign of my own in like FR. So changes in cannon, usually don't bother me.

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft: An In-Depth Review

Now, the review. I really appreciated it. Honestly, Ravenloft is typically a pass for me. It usually just looked like D&D, but we are playing through old movie plots. I know that is a pretty simple-view of it, but my brain is my brain. This however, helps me see potential in some of the tools...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft: An In-Depth Review

Not to dredge up this strand of the thread, but agreed. Trauma does not care about age. I probably wouldn't classify it as trauma exactly, but my fiancé passed away early this year. If I was playing in a game today that pulled something that looked like or hard reminded me of that, I'm not...

D&D 5E Ravenloft Previews of Dementlieu, Lamordia, and Har'Akir

I like what I have seen thus far. I also like the drinking game I have devised, where I take a shot whenever I read @Bedrockgames say Boxed set or Black Box.

Interesting. I believe I like what I just saw.

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Pretty true. I am generally nice, but can be far more blunt or snarky about things over the internet. However, I think it can also happen when you have to keep that stuff in when doing your job. And when you are stuck at your home, and going to work mostly for over a year, things can begin to...

Agreed. I very much enjoyed Innistrad card art. It was also a pretty good block.

D&D General How AD&D Handled 'Attunement': The Magic of the Item Saving Throw Table

I like taking that extra fiddling out of the game. No more rolling for whether things broke after, or during, or whether the rogue using this wand actually blows his own hand off instead of casting the spell. I will also state though, that older versions of D&D have slowly pushed me closer to...

D&D General What DM-skills are you bad at?

I seem to need improvement in a variety of areas. What I feel I am worst at though, is making villains that are hated, without getting mustache twirly evil, or beloved NPCs that the players actually trust and can rely on as friends/allies. I mean... sometimes apparently my best efforts turn...

D&D 5E Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Art Preview

Agreed. I like how the fire is made to look out of focus but still sticks out quite well.
