D&D 5E Wandering Monsters: Big Beasts

Good point. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they try! ;)

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

I'm reminded of two sayings: "With great power comes great responsibility" and "if you make your bed you'd better lie in it". Can we at least agree that if no effort is made to curb the inherent power and versatility of magic in the campaign world then it will, almost by definition, run rampant...

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters: Big Beasts

So what? Is lion fantastic? Is tiger fantastic? Is bear fantastic? Oh my. Now, this is a different problem and happens to be one I have a certain sympathy for. The 1e AD&D MM and MMII have pages and pages of dinosaurs, most of which are generally similar. Personally, if I were writing the...

I have Star Wars X Wing!

Happy (belated) birthday! X-Wing is an awesome game :) Wayland Games (who do "Beasts of War") are arguably the cheapest place for booster sets--and they currently still have stock: http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/fantasy-flight-games/x-wing/cat_1255.html That is awesome :)

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters: Big Beasts

As far as the English language is concerned (although the fact of the matter holds true for any other natural language you care to translate into) we call a bear a bear and a tiger a tiger because these are the names we (i.e. speakers of the languages concerned) developed for these creatures...

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters: Big Beasts

Personally I'd prefer a triceratops to be called as such. Much as I'd call a tiger a tiger not a stripyfur fangbiter. Would thog the caveman, or whoever, refer to a dinosaur by its given name? No. But the MM is designed so that I can find the stats not thog.

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

It seems to me the easiest way to do this would be through skills and feats by, perhaps, introducing separate skill/feat point tracks much the same way Pathfinder has different xp tracks for different styles of play?

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

I wasn't disagreeing with you. Perhaps "And it still doesn't help with..." would have been better worded "Not that it helps with..." ?

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

LotFP attempts to raise the fighter's combat effectiveness. In combat a character hits if their d20 roll + attack bonus + environment mods is greater than the defending AC. 0-level types get no attack bonus. Non-fighter classes get a +1 attack bonus at 1st level and above. Fighters get a +2...

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

Yeah, I can appreciate where they're coming from. In D&D I'd want to role-play the infiltration. Retrospectively saying "A-ha! This was me all long!" doesn't mesh with my POV cause-and-effect way of playing, even though it'd likely be great in a different game. @sheadunne: I like your "summon...

Nice article. Thanks for the link :)

What is the downside to simple systems?

Tables are very out of fashion right now but I wonder if it would be possible to make a simple rpg system that codified everything in tables? Hmm...

Random items being added to your RPGnow/DTRPG cart?

Every week I find a lot of stuff appears in my DTRPG cart. Usually just after "Pretty Darn Fun" has been published... But no, nothing I can't account for :(

    Free Will and Story

I tend to agree with this. I've certainly encountered these situations but generally operate by allowing that instance to go ahead with the knowledge that it'll be house ruled in the future. It's certainly possible to write a borked game system and for players (on both sides of the screen) to...

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

Ok, cool :) Yeah, I have a similar experience. I have trouble identifying with a lot of the discussion about non-caster disparity as it's not something I've particularly encountered. Perhaps I'm an excellent GM... :hmm: Much (much!) more likely is that I've been lucky with my players. It...

Worldbuilders (and Destroyers) Unite - A Risk Legacy Review

As a big fan of Risk! I'm very intrigued by this. It sounds so much better than Risk 2210 AD, which was too similar to the original game to be interesting. I could never play this, however. I'm far too anally retentive to draw on the board and tear up cards!

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

I think this is generally true for the reasons you state. Having said that I've just noticed the badge attached to this thread title. I've come to this thread from the discussions about what people would like to see in DnDNext and I've been posting here with that in mind. I now realise perhaps...

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

Well, no. Neither do I. I see. I was instead viewing this in the context of your exchange with Quickleaf earlier in the thread, in that some of this lack of narrative parity is perhaps a by-product of adventure design. Some proportion of players are homebrew adventure designers and so such...

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

Indeed but my point was inexperienced new players might benefit from a greater emphasis being placed on this information, rather than it being "relegated" to supplemental volumes. That seems to support your assertion that "education on adventure design (for the GM) and spotlight sharing (for...

    Narrative Space Options for non-spellcasters

Perhaps this kind of information ought to be included in the "beginners' boxes"? I'm assuming they generally only contain a "lite" version of the rules and pretty knick-knacks--I've never bought one so don't know. LotFP comes with a tutorial book containing an essay by James Raggi that...
