D&D 5E A Simple Solution to the Saving Throw and other Math Problems

I'd rather just have spells get attack rolls that target ability scores--the full score instead of 10 + mod.

    D&D 5E Saving Throws

I'd like a 4e style system that uses ability scores (rather than 10 + mod) as the DC that a spellcaster rolls against. That more strongly reinforces the rock-paper-scissors aspect of saves in a good way since individual ability scores increase twice as fast as modifiers, but there are 6 avenues...

    D&D 5E D&D Podcast: A1 Playtest

I can't bring myself to have a strong opinion on saves until they sort out the basics of caster damage (including the role of cantrips vs low level spells) vs. fighter damage. As of now the difficult saves are the only thing keeping those low level spells relevant, which is an issue when high...

    D&D 5E Dragon's-Eye View: A Wizard of a Different Color

I don't love it but as long as they realize that it's non-functional, and that's intentional, I suppose it's fine. What I'm hoping they avoid is the dungeon punk aesthetic that started with 3e, where every adventurer looks like the D&D equivalent of a Rob Liefeld character.

D&D 5E Skills Should Be Core

Tying the size of the skill die to ability scores rather than to level may allow for the best of both worlds. Shameless self-promotion intended.

Tweaking the Star Wars Saga Edition Skill System

The only problem I have with the Saga system is low-level force users against Defenses, which have not yet scaled up. So, e.g., you h might have someone rolling +10 or more Use the Force checks against an enemy with defenses between 11 and 14, typically.

D&D 5E [Warlords] Should D&D be tied to D&D Worlds?

I wouldn't mind seeing the following, given their current thinking on healing (heal up to half in wilderness, heal up to full in civilization): A character is bloodied at 1/2 hp. Bloodied means you are wounded and the wound must be treated before you can return to full effectiveness. After a...

D&D 5E We have a Legends and Lore this week

I haven't read this entire thread, but taking what Mearls has said as a parameter, I'd like to see them bring back the bloodied condition. If you're not bloodied and you get a night's rest, you regain all your hit points. If you are bloodied and you get a night's rest, you heal up to your...

D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores and Skills

That is a cost. But I figure the design is headed that direction anyway. In principle, though, you don't have to assign abilities to skills. You could make the call about which ability is relevant when you describe the action and make the check. The ability score determines the size of the...

D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores and Skills

I have a half-baked idea about how to handle ability scores and skills for both the basic version of Next (sans skills) and the advanced module with skills. It partly (or largely) divorces skill levels from experience and ties them to ability scores more closely to make the two versions closer...

New Southeast London group looking for players

Just a bump and an update that we'll be wrapping up Tremulus soon and switching to Dungeon World for another shortish campaign. Still looking for a couple players!

I'm insulted by how humans are depicted in D&D.

Before I get worked up about racial languages, I'd like to see good rules for languages, period.

    The Thrills of Skills

The other nice thing about Cortex is the ability to mix and match skills and abilities. In most contexts, Persuade + Personality makes sense. If talking to a scholar, you might use Persuade + Intellect. It's like a Chinese menu since skills aren't associated with particular scores.

    Need Help with Info?

Make sure you're using "up to date" monsters. In the initial release of 4e the monsters did too little damage so combats dragged out quite a while. This is worth a skim: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?254630-Stalker0-s-Guide-to-Anti-Grind

D&D 5E Why are we still stuck with divine casters knowing all spells?

I'd be happy if wizard healing was peculiar to one or more traditions. That way DM's that want a more traditional split can just outlaw those traditions.

D&D 5E Why are we still stuck with divine casters knowing all spells?

I'd like to see cleric rituals tied to holy places (including impromptu holy places). Let them be sorcerers when they're out adventuring but be able to work some righteous mojo in their gods' temples.

D&D 5E Why are we still stuck with divine casters knowing all spells?

Spheres would be fine. But I'd rather clerics act like sorcerers. You determine what "gifts" you deity has bestowed upon you, and that's it for spontaneous spellcasting. Everything else is a ritual in which you are asking your god for a particular favor. There could appropriate retraining...

    D&D 5E Adventures

Murder in Baldur's Gate sounds very cool. I'm very happy for the focus to switch back to adventures rather than splat books. But the million dollar question is whether adventures will work well with different rules modules.

New Southeast London group looking for players

My wife and I will be hosting a regular game night in our apartment in southeast London (SE18) on Monday evenings starting May 6. We have an excellent GM onboard who has extensive knowledge of a variety of systems. We'll be starting with Tremulus, and continuing with shorter...
