    D&D 5E Creative and innovation?

Creative in mechanics, classic in flavor.

D&D 5E Ability checks not using modifier

A nice feature of the mod = score -10 system is that your score is your "take 10" result, so it's easy to figure out which tasks you can auto-succeed at when you're not under pressure. At also let's you bring back static defenses a la 4e: instead of a Wisdom save, you hit someone's Wisdom score...

    D&D 5E Attack Bonuses

Not necessarily trying to get rid of the str bonus to attack in general, but magic items by their nature can be ad hoc exceptions to the baseline rules. Magic not science. I'd rather patch the rules in corner cases than have the rules dictate the fiction. I suspect the representative or modal...

    D&D 5E Attack Bonuses

This is way anti-traditional, but I'd be much happier if belts of giant strength increased damage but not attack rolls.

D&D 5E Embracing Hit Points as Fatigue

This is promisingly simple as well. I like it. You could level or even double level as the threshold probably. My only concern is that it gives you something to check rather than something sticks out already (like a crit). But it has the advantage of being less swingy and allowing the special...

D&D 5E Embracing Hit Points as Fatigue

Not easier to dodge (in terms of hp damage), harder to aim for, hence the penalty to hit. And that's only if you're bypassing the usual requirement of getting a crit in order to deliver the poison. It presumes no knowledge on the part of the dodger. It's a choice made by the attacker. Think of...

    D&D 5E New Paladin Oaths

I'm tempted to make a coffee talk joke about a certain figure being neither chaotic nor good. But I won't, so please don't discuss (given board protocol).

    D&D 5E Feats

I'm more concerned about the feats that just give bonuses: iron hide, dual wielding, weapon mastery, etc. Weren't we promised that these feats were a thing of the past?

    D&D 5E D&D Podcast 3/20/2013

I don't think expertise dice add to damage. L&L indicated they add to attack rolls or AC and recharge with rest. I suspect martial damage dice are basically gone in favor of a uniform x[W] system a la 4e, with different rate of advancement for different classes.

D&D 5E Embracing Hit Points as Fatigue

I don't want to respond at length to the transcendent comments that amount to "why start this thread?" except to say that I prefer hit points as fatigue primarily for fluff/fiction reasons. In the version of heroic fantasy in my head the average character in a group of 4-6 does not get stabbed...

D&D 5E L&L: New Packet Hits This Wednesday

Either the ranger has non-spellcasting features that make them unique or they don't. If they don't, just multiclass druid. If they do, it's important that those non-spellcasting features not be bundled with spellcasting.

D&D 5E L&L: New Packet Hits This Wednesday

A lot of this sounds pretty good, but this is my reaction to spellcasting rangers.

D&D 5E Embracing Hit Points as Fatigue

Yes, I think this is another part of the puzzle. When I contemplated injuries in 4e I thought of bloodied and 0 hp as important conditions for when we reach for a more complex mechanic. In Next (without bloodied) I'd like to see effects at 0 hp (how are you defeated?), crit (so that some...

D&D 5E D&D Next Q&A: Martial Healing, Fighter Utility, and Ranger Challenges

Unless you make them mostly general, a la the favored enemies in the linked thread above. E.g., Forest: +2 Stealth Deal extra damage with ranged attacks when hidden Ignore difficult terrain caused by plants Mountains: +2 Climb Knock opponent back when attacking with advantage Climb faster You...

D&D 5E READ AND REPLY TO THIS 5E WARLORD THREAD, SOLDIER

That is a sweet Bard design Kamikaze. An important option that the warlord introduces is a non-magical, non-sneaky canny character. I'm using "canny" as a catch-all for Int, Wis, and Cha. As such I'd be equally happy with a very flexible fighter class, non-magical bard options, or a distinct...

D&D 5E Embracing Hit Points as Fatigue

Fair warning: This post/thread will annoy you if you hate the idea of hit points as (primarily) fatigue. I've been thinking about what it would take for the mechanics of D&D Next to primarily embrace the idea of hit points as fatigue without a complicated injury or wound/vitality system. That...

D&D 5E D&D Next Q&A: Martial Healing, Fighter Utility, and Ranger Challenges

Favored enemy sounds like a specialty rather than a class feature to me. I'd rather see the ranger have terrain options.
