    D&D: The New Poker?

Who knew Bugaboo would be ENWorld's Nostradamus?

I am troubled by the closing of responses to the News Digest by Abstruse

To those who disagree with what gets a pass, and what does not, I think that this comment is the most important take away from this thread. This is most definitely Morrus' party, and as the host he gets to set the rules.

Cubicle 7 forums to close due to EU data law

That's why I edited my post (which was in response to me mis-reading yours). I initially thought it was "whichever is lesser" rather than "whichever is greater.

Ach! I had that reversed. Obviously I need to check with our compliance officer.

Cubicle 7 forums to close due to EU data law

In an aside, NPR.com decided to give visitors an option to visit a no-frills site like looks like it's from the days of the early web. Here's the choice. And here's what you see when you choose text only.

Cubicle 7 forums to close due to EU data law

I figured - just couldn't remember getting another notification (which, perversely, seems to be required even for people who've opted in before). How did you deal with the data portability requirements? Does vBulletin allow for exports/dumps? I'm keen to understand how others are dealing with...

Scheduling Conflicts: How do you solve 'em?

Like the Jester, we use quorum as the guideline. For "important" sessions, though (Sessions 0, sessions with big showdowns with Big Evil Bad Guys) we like to have all hands, and will cancel (meaning, play board games) on those days.

Opt-in can be (and usually is) a one-time event. And if you look at the new terms of service for the big platforms, they updated them recently.

Cubicle 7 forums to close due to EU data law

Actually, based on all the hoops we've been jumping through at work to comply, logging username and IP address would only be illegal if the user wasn't notified and opted-in. ENWorld can comply by making certain that a PM gets sent with the notification, and to have everyone "opt-in" before...

Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done

Quibble: Draw have black skin because they began as a (in my opinion - bad) take on svartalfar (literally, "black elves). Blame Roger Moore for the divine curse angle, which only came about after their initial appearance(s) in G1-3. Seriously - the dark skin of drow is based on an idea about a...

List of monsters confirmed in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes

I wonder if they mean “obliviax.”

Dealing with spellcasters as a martial

I see the desire here - countering casters can and should be a “thing” for spell-less warriors - but disagree with the action economy trade-off. Using attacks rather than the Attack action is simply a non-starter. I’d suggest the following: * Warrior grapples caster using normal routine, to...

Archdevil Moloch (Mordenkainen's tome of foes preview from Dragon+)

A name-level party access to Crusader's Mantle and solid bow attacks are best suited to win vs Moloch if he uses his teleport ability to jump around. Fleeing outright will always be an option for him, but if the PCs have access to teleport or plane shift they have the same option so he can't...

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

Very close - within a point per level or so, based on the averages.

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

As a DM, I try to avoid "fixing" fights, but have done so on rare occasions, because I am a total PC fanboy and secretly root for them to win the entire time - even when I am controlling the dragon that is in the middle of eating the cleric. Three ideas, when things are going sideways: *...

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

My group's table has done multiple 5e campaigns now, and we've hit upon the following: * PCs gain max HP as Level 1, and then 1/2 hit die (flat) + 1/2 hit die (random) thereafter. So a 2nd level Fighter would have 15 + 1d5 + (Con Bonus x 2). This has been a good compromise for the table, and is...

Cleric of Gruumsh in a party with an Elf

I think you're taking player empowerment one step further than is really fair to the DM, Eltab. Players ignoring a DM's "setting canon" without meta-conversations about what that means is every bit as disrespectful as a DM overriding PC actions "because your PC wouldn't do that". Players...

Cleric of Gruumsh in a party with an Elf

If nothing else, you can always use the situation as food for thought for your next Session 0.

Cleric of Gruumsh in a party with an Elf

I think there’s a two step process here. I would do these in order. 1. Talk to the players together, either in person or in an email thread. Find out if they want to wrangle through these problems in play without your help, or if they would like some support to push things along. If you start...

Mike Mearls Happy Fun Hour: The Warlord

Say you want a curry for dinner. So do I. We both put together our curry dishes, adding the same kinds, but not amounts, of ingredients. We then share those dishes, and I say that yours is too hot, and you say mine is not hot enough. Objectively they are both curry - they have the same list of...
