Jonathan Tweet advices: let the players peek behind the screen

I think the two different sides here are kind of talking over each other's heads, but I can't really put my finger on how.. EDIT: Also, I would hardly call it an uproar.

    4e Launch minus fanfare

Agreed! Everyone's focusing on the failed DDI content, but what about the release date announcement? I expected some grand "4e is out!" banner or something like that, or at least a Feature saying something about the release. Are they waiting until tomorrow (the Game Day)?

Jonathan Tweet advices: let the players peek behind the screen

I'm a little on the fence about showing my players all the mechanics, but it seems to me that it would lead to a lot more sayings like "Oh, an orc, I need to roll 13 or better to hit him" rather than "Damn, orcs! I pull out my longsword and attack". Which, in my opinion, is not good.

    D&D 4E 4E Combat Crib Sheet

Great, thanks! This will work great for introducing 4e-combat to my less system-minded players :)

    Amazon shipped my books

This is funny; I read this thread and immediately dropped my friend a line on msn asking what Amazon said about our order (we are ordering together to save on shipping). He said it had ETA 10-12. June, which was okay. But, like 10 minutes later, he gets a mail from Amazon, and oh yeah, the books...

    Game 1 (0) advice?

My most recent campaign was started using your second "stereotypical" beginning: The PCs all started in a wagon together with their rather unsympathetic, mustache-sporting noble employer (who was later going to turn into a villain, he he). I think having this common figure that they all disliked...

    Looking for Combat Mat advice

Anyone have any experience with Pilot pens (they're the only ones I can find at my local book store).

    D&D 4E 4e character sheet in pre-gen style

Hey, really nice! A lot better than the PHB one. Wish you'd have used .doc though, but kudos anyway.

    The Power of 5

The problem with this, of course, is that PCs are assumed to have a certain amount of items at any given level, and if they don't they might just end up being sub-par, thus breaking the system. At least, this was true for 3e, I'm personally hoping that it's been fixed for 4e, what with the...

Grit in 4e - how will YOU do it?

There seems to be a large interest for the more gritty games here on the boards, and I got to thinking: how are you going to go about combining the (apparent) ease of play and sound math of 4e with a more visceral feel? I know in my games, I am at the very least going to rule that a character...

    The Power of 5

Couldn't agree more. The scale is way off, player economy is basically just inflated. I'd much rather have a game where my players think finding a chest with a hundred gp (just imagine that many gold pieces for a second) is exciting, as opposed to now where it's basically just pocket change...

Okay people, a little wake up call.

This. I totally agree; reading through my 3e splatbooks now, what draws my interest when reading about new classes/feats etc is their mechanical distinction, like "Wow, this ability is awesome!". I just can't see that happening while reading a 4e book. Problem is, most DMs don't WANT to...

How do you construct your NPCs?

I'm currently in the process of writing and adventure (the first one for 4e, in fact), and I'm trying to find a good way to write up NPCs that isn't a time sink; just a few lines that pretty much give the NPC away, making it easy to just 'drop' it into a session, and have them seem like...

Threadwin. I will definitely be using this in my games.

    The big deal about grapple

I do believe it is Str vs. Ref, which immobilizes a creature within one size category of you. Doesn't provoke an OA. EDIT: Ops, it was Str. EDIT II: This is from the Quick Play Rules from Raiders of Oakhurst.

You've Got Spycraft in my D&D

Allright, very interesting. Thanks! I'll sod off now

Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right?

Dragonborn were banned from the moment I saw them, although, a player has managed to nag himself into playing one. We'll see, though. IF he does play one, it will be interesting to see how the locals (not to mention the other members of the party, who agree with me) react to this weird, scaly...

You've Got Spycraft in my D&D

Haven't really heard of Spycraft before. Mind explaining how these rules work? (Sorry for hijack, but that made me curious)

Orcus Previews the 4e Core Rulebooks

Indeed. I have this nightmare that I'll crack open the MM, only to be met by "Felldemon Daggerstab" and the likes, presented only by their noun-noun names and (admittedly easy-to-use) stat blocks without any semblance of flavour. EDIT: Everyone's saying "aah, alphabetic this and that", but...
