D&D 5E Access to Races in a Campaign

Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes too many options can stifle creativity.

D&D 5E Access to Races in a Campaign

Having more options doesn't necessarily lead to greater creativity. I know people who can be very creative with just a bag of rocks.

    D&D 5E Warlord Name Poll

Warlord? I don't like the name. I don't even like the concept. If there was ever a disconnect between the name of a class and the features of a class, this is it. Warlord isn't a class, it's a title. Ghengis Khan is a Warlord. Some first level guy in a tavern isn't a Warlord, he's a...

D&D 5E Access to Races in a Campaign

I don't allow Half-orcs, Drow, Tieflings or Dragonborn unless the players want to be hunted down by the local lord and his men-at-arms, and burned at the stake by frightened villagers.

    D&D 5E Why Would I Play a Ranger?

Party size is another factor to consider - in smaller parties (2 to 4 player character's), having a Ranger Beastmaster with his beast gives you essentially another 'player' to help your group, and multiplies the benefits mentioned above (extra attack, extra target, scout, etc.).

    D&D 5E Why Would I Play a Ranger?

"Why would I play a Ranger?" I don't play one usually, but I will answer for my son - he LOVES the Ranger, specifically the Beastmaster. He just loves the idea of having a beast companion (wolf). Overall, I think the Ranger is really cool, the concept is great, it has some unique abilities...

D&D 5E How Much D&D is To Much?

“The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom...You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough.” ― William Blake, Proverbs of Hell

So INTERPARTY conflict time, how do you handle it as a DM?

It's such a broad/open-ended topic it's hard to give specific advice. In business I've spent countless days in professional training classes on Conflict Resolution, Negotiating, etc., all of that sort of thing would be relevant, but there's not enough space in the forum to recap all that advice...

    D&D 5E Human v. Gnome

    Size matters ... human.

    D&D 5E Anti-insperation

It depends on your group of players. When I DM for "the old guys", my friends who've played for years, have wives, kids and a lifetime of experience behind them, everything is a grey area. The adventures are a lot more grittier and dark. There's a lot of moral ambivalence in our shared world...

D&D 5E 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Wow that sucks, some of my own favorite characters over the years have been female. Does this DM not let humans play non-humans either? Does one have to be short to play a halfling in his game?? :)

    D&D 5E Anti-insperation

I love this stuff, let the Divine Wrath begin! - a halfling loses his luck - a cleric's healing spells just don't seem to work as well any more - a PC's magic item goes from a plus to a curse - a spellcasting focus withers and dies and needs to be replaced at the temple - a sentient magic item...

Selfish playstyles and other newer issues with the game

Reading my own post above, I realize now that a lot of that advice is the similar to the advice I give and get at work. I've manged people in business for almost as long as I've been a DM. Who knows, maybe those aspiring to be a better DM should pick up a business people management book...

Selfish playstyles and other newer issues with the game

I've played RPG's for almost 40 years, and while circumstances, technologies, systems, etc., have changed, the one constant that hasn't changed is Human Nature. It's been pretty constant for thousands of years, and it's fundamental human nature for people to look out for their own best/self...

D&D 5E Refusing To Heal Party Members?

I wouldn't regret it at all. Our party had a thief who used to do this all the time, including picking our pockets. When we complained about it he'd just laugh and shrug and say, "I'm just role-playing what my thief would do." So the next time I caught him doing it, I decided to "roleplay...

    D&D 5E Race Brackets (2) Half-Elf v. (3) Tiefling

Ahhh ... so that's what it's called ;) If elves can marry their first cousins they get my vote!

D&D 5E Refusing To Heal Party Members?

I don't know the player, the party, the DM or the groups gaming style, etc. etc (Insert a dozen other qualifiers/disclaimers here including my own class prejudices and bias, etc.) ... but ... I have to wonder what a virtuous knight in shining armor is doing hanging around with a savage, a...
