I don't allow Half-orcs, Drow, Tieflings or Dragonborn unless the players want to be hunted down by the local lord and his men-at-arms, and burned at the stake by frightened villagers.

Party size is another factor to consider - in smaller parties (2 to 4 player character's), having a Ranger Beastmaster with his beast gives you essentially another 'player' to help your group, and multiplies the benefits mentioned above (extra attack, extra target, scout, etc.).

It's such a broad/open-ended topic it's hard to give specific advice. In business I've spent countless days in professional training classes on Conflict Resolution, Negotiating, etc., all of that sort of thing would be relevant, but there's not enough space in the forum to recap all that advice...

It depends on your group of players. When I DM for "the old guys", my friends who've played for years, have wives, kids and a lifetime of experience behind them, everything is a grey area. The adventures are a lot more grittier and dark. There's a lot of moral ambivalence in our shared world...

Wow that sucks, some of my own favorite characters over the years have been female. Does this DM not let humans play non-humans either? Does one have to be short to play a halfling in his game?? :)

Reading my own post above, I realize now that a lot of that advice is the similar to the advice I give and get at work. I've manged people in business for almost as long as I've been a DM. Who knows, maybe those aspiring to be a better DM should pick up a business people management book...
