Choose an RPG system for 'Saw'

Oh, snap. The best part in the whole franchise was when Wesley from The Princess Bride sawed his own foot off. After that it was all of debatable worth, IMO.

Choose an RPG system for 'Saw'

The thing about Dread is that the system is really player vs. him(her)self. Being physically responsible for the result of the challenge adds an element that is really only present in LARP. And it is very tense. I poo-pooed Dread a bit when it first came out but I take it all back. It is by far...

    Character Wealth Confusion

This is the best way to go. In addition don't let any single item be worth more than 1/4 of the total wealth. Way too often players will buy one big item and a bunch of swag.

Is there a setting-free version of the new World of Darkness rules?

It's die-step, not dice-pool if I remember correctly. BESM was just d6 but you could change the dial for other settings. Wickett: Take a look at Sorcerer. It's a d10 pool and is all about morality. This is a pretty different game. It's very n-word (narrative) but can make for some interesting...

Irreconcilable differences(Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's...)

I can't give any hard numbers but I do remember most of the 2e-->3e angst being pre-release. Once the OGL/STL was finalized and released the anti-3e noise quieted considerably. People were excited that the game was becoming a lot more community oriented especially in the wake of TSR's gross-ish...

    sword and sorcery genre rpg

That's a fairly old article. It may even be from 3.0 era. I have my doubts that Mr. King will be updating it for 4e. You can probably adapt elements of the article to 4e but some things just won't work. Constitution as HP, alignments, er... monster summoning. 4e to S&S can be achieved in a lot...

    sword and sorcery genre rpg

I'm very excited to play it. My only concern is that it is so far removed from the games my boys are used to playing. It shouldn't be that hard a sell cuz S&S is a staple of our games but the system is pretty non-traditional. How did you sell it to your group? Or was it perhaps sold to you?

    sword and sorcery genre rpg

It's pretty crunchy. Here's the SRD. You could also have a look at Sorcerer which has two S&S specific expansions Sorcerer & Sword and the Dictionary of Mu. There's also Barbarians of Lemuria. I recently picked up In A Wicked Age and although I haven't played it yet it looks pretty interesting...

    Forked Thread: gimme some narration

Here's a few links. I'm not sure if these address your problem directly but might give you some jumping off points. Role-playing tips GM Guide Fighting the good fight This tidbit from John H. Kim is just a big list of links but there is a ton of reading to be done here. Good luck.

Curious about something: would you play in an AD&D campaign?

I would play one of the super-modules again. I have pretty fond memories of Slavers and Against the Giants. I also enjoyed the first two bigguns in the FR, Pool of Radiance and Curse of Azure Bonds. I would play with the old BECMI stuff again too. I don't think I could run any of these games...

    d20srd down?

There's the D&D Wiki too. It's almost as navigable as d20srd.org and also has other interesting articles. There is also an attached d20 Modern srd.

    Forked Thread: gimme some narration

I'll try to keep this short cause I'm a bit of a longwinded blow-hard. If 4e is not doing what you want it to and another game is there is no question. Play the game that meets your needs. Done. If you want more narration take the lead. Make sure all of your descriptions are oozing with...

    A question I can't believe I'm asking

From the SRD re Quickdraw It has nothing to do with the free action per se but is rather built right into the feat. Most free actions are pretty innocuous but occasionally you get something like changing grip on a 2-h weapon as a free action. I don't think a spellcaster armed with a two...

    Looking for a new system!!!

The Shadow of Yesterday Here's the SRD in a wiki. Interesting stuff. It's indie, kinda quirky but seems like a really focused game. I haven't played it myself but I've read it and heard some actual play as well as a lot of good word of mouth. Mongoose Runequest Another SRD wiki. Plenty of...

    A question I can't believe I'm asking

I think my rulings over the years have filtered through the Quickened [XXX] feat as a free action. No limit on the amount of free actions per round but generally only one action of a specific kind per round. After 8 years of play rulings of convenience have a ring of authority in my head.

That should be 15 shouldn't it? A transposition of SAN and POW, maybe.

Want to know how desperate I am for some gaming lately?

I've been in similar situation and actual play gaming podcasts helped me a bit. Check out rpgmp3.com. If you go to the forums there are all sorts of podcasts to check out. In particular I recommend the Whartson Hall Gamers. They have their own category in the forums. The Pirates of the Spanish...
