Sure, all the time. They're basically technical manuals or reference books, so I highlight in them, mark them up with pencil and/or pen, put sticky notes on important pages, sticky tab dividers to call out specific sections, write my name in them, etc. I see no reason not to mark up the ones I use.

I really like Fiery Dragon's counter sets (Fiery Dragon). I use them for all my 4e games. Far less expensive than miniatures, durable, and easy to store. I like miniatures well enough, but it's far easier to pick or make a paper counter for my specific PC than to search all the various miniature...

^That being said, for those with DDI subscriptions, the Monster Builder software makes it ridiculously easy to modify monsters from any source. I haven't had the need to tweak monster stats yet, though. But I can if I wanted to, just a matter of tweaking the builder to taste.

IIRC, WOTC announced Dark Sun at GenCon last year, which suggests there's at least a year's lead time. And IIRC, GenCon announced a Ravenloft RPG at this year's GenCon, and that's slated for a fall 2011 release, also about a year's lead time. 10-18 months sounds about right.

Tough to say. I don't think there are that many RPGs that'll have mainstream appeal potential. A Harry Potter RPG, maybe.
