Hey, your defensiveness is showing. And 'hipster labels'? Seriously? Way to raise the tone. The vast, vast majority of people never bought into that playstyle. But some did, shouted on message boards about '15 minute workdays' as if that was inevitable, and as such, the designers of 4e...

    D&D 5E The OGL -- A Lesson for 5E

From what I understand, Paizo makes the majority of their money off of their Adventure Paths. That means that if 5e has anything remotely like an OGL (which is the one deal-breaker I have as a filthy copyleftist, creative common's fanatic), it would be foolish of them not to publish 5e...

    Gamist, Narrativist, and Simulationist

Well there's your problem right there.:) GNS is more of a metatheory of how players and the rules system interact during play. You can't necessarily look at a game system and say, 'ah yes, this is a Gamist system', because the system in and of itself only has life when its played around the...

At least they're trying new things. GNS theory is a tool, nothing more. It has tolerances, like any tool.

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

This is something I ran into, too. I think it's a byproduct of being so well balanced: if you lose a character early, the predictable back and forth flow of the fight goes right out the window and usually the party gets steamrolled in a couple rounds. Which I have no problem with, but it's not...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

I've always had a deep level of discomfort with the whole fluff/crunch divide. It's symptomatic of a big cognitive gulf that I doubt DnD 5e will be able to breech.

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

There's a lot of poo-pooing save or die effects, and mostly that's because of a changing game play philosophy that's emerged in the past fifteen years or so. Save or die used to be the last line of defense, a chance to keep your character alive when you didn't plan the encounter properly...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

One of the key features of a system that supports CaW play is the ability to get in over your head unexpectedly. I'm not going to shout about 'lethality', as that I think that's a straw man. There aren't too many games that are designed to be instantly lethal if a character gets in over their...

    D&D 5E Another Critical Hits 5E Report

The Big Purple makes this and the WoTC boards look like a cuddle-fest. Those people are vicious.

    Virtuoso- African Steampunk

Virtuoso is a comic series I write about an inventor who sort of, accidentally, through no fault of her own destroys her entire society. Now she has mobsters, cultists, and spies chasing her, and she has to figure out how to survive in a world gone nuts. More to the RPG point, here's a little...
