D&D General Why are spells grouped into "levels"?

It might be meta, or it might not be. It depends on how you think the fictional world actually works. While I understand that there is a good deal of fantasy fiction in which spell levels, and even sometimes spell caster levels are real things that fictional characters talk about, to me that...

D&D General Why are spells grouped into "levels"?

They would. However, I take the division of spells into discrete, well-identified "levels" as a convenience for game purposes, not an exact description of how magic works in the characters' world. Do characters in your world(s) discuss the toughness of monsters using the term "Armor Class"?

D&D General Why are spells grouped into "levels"?

Personally, I don't think characters should be discussing spell levels (by whatever name) any more than they should be discussing hit dice or armor class. That's probably why I don't like terms like "circle" - it does sound like something one is trying to make into an in-game term. I'm mildly...

D&D General Why are spells grouped into "levels"?

Eh, it's a traditional part of the game. Like you said, it isn't a really big deal. People are perfectly capable of dealing with multiple meanings for the same word. We do it all the time.

D&D General Why are spells grouped into "levels"?

Oh, yeah. Every new player I've seen needs this clarified. The confusion isn't permanent, but it definitely makes people do a double-take.

D&D General Why are spells grouped into "levels"?

So, wait. You think that changing the term makes it less meta to talk about the concept in-character?

D&D 5E 5e "Anyspell," Would You Allow the Enclosed Spell?

Ah, I see. Yes, you are correct; I somewhat overstated the case.
  17. Harzel

D&D 5E 5e "Anyspell," Would You Allow the Enclosed Spell?

True, but irrelevant. The comments being made are from a game design perspective, not a player perspective. And from a game design perspective, if there is one option that every player takes, then that is clear evidence that that option is so desirable that it is, effectively, not an option...

D&D 5E 5e "Anyspell," Would You Allow the Enclosed Spell?

No, and I can't imagine any variation that I would allow either. It is absurdly OP and it eliminates the whole spell selection process, which is a staple of the game.
