D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Nit-picking the example doesn't change anything. If a character wants to climb something like El Capitan it's not going to be easy. Those 50 people? They are pro climbers with gear that characters don't typically have and all climbers in today's world are following established routes...

Eberron: Forge of the Artificer Alternate Cover Revealed

People really reject books like this because of the art? I get if it's not exactly your style and I have preferences in art like everyone else. But it's not exactly high on my buy/don't buy criteria like, oh, whether or not I think it will be something fun to use at the game table.

In the game where a proprietor left in the middle of the night it was pretty easy to identify a bad DM. Did you try talking to her? I just don't think rules and restrictions will automatically fix every GM. At least not in a game I want to play.

The reason I would have talked to the DM is that they may simply have not known how to handle the heist. The right way to handle it would have been to tell people that it was a linear campaign and as such there would be limited options at time. When the group got the idea of doing a heist they...

What can I say? I disagree with whoever told you that. Now ... if the question was "is this a railroad" then a single incidence of a bad call by a DM doesn't make it a railroad in my opinion. It's certainly something I would have called a timeout on and explained my displeasure. Hopefully the...

I would say you had a bad DM. This one instance isn't necessarily what I qualify as a railroad but it was definitely a cheesy way to stop your plan from succeeding and something I never would have done. Even if the proprietor somehow figured out you were coming the most I would have done was...

In the post that started this I mentioned levitate and spider climb as options to avoid the challenge and that I was okay with that. Guess I should have linked back to it since it seems like you may have missed. I was just pointing out that teleport isn't as powerful as some people say.

We stopped using TotM at some point shortly after we started playing and before 1e came out. I was just pieces of paper on an old chalkboard and a ruler to get general positioning but I've never looked back.

D&D (2024) How do we feel about the new spells

It's probably just setting up the die roll if you use the tool's die roll. Range and touch attacks bonuses are the same so it doesn't matter.

D&D 5E I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

So we're still arguing about this? Has anyone come up with what they thought backwards compatibility means other than "absolutely no rule changes"? Because I can't think of how much more compatibility we were supposed to have. Like others, one DM is still using an old mod only making tweaks...

If I have to make an on the fly ruling I'll let people know we can discuss it later. If I decide to stick with it I'll add to my house rules. But a lot of times these things are very situational and a broader rule doesn't really apply. For example I have an illusionist in one of my games now so...

I mentioned spider climb or levitate as possible options. I just don't see those spells being prepared all that often. That and I'm perfectly okay if the group considers options, especially ones that use up resources.

D&D (2024) How do we feel about the new spells

I don't know if anyone has a comprehensive list, I found Spell Changes In The Revised D&D 2024 Player's Handbook | One D&D Spell Changes which might be complete.

D&D (2024) How do we feel about the new spells

Like I said, I don't think it's clear since it's not spelled out in the text but it is indicated in the spell block. Compare that to fire bolt which says ranged spell.

If they have teleport, which is a pretty significant resource cost at a level 7 spell slot. They are teleporting to an area they've never viewed so they are only on target on a 74-100. Considering that being off target with a 54-73 could be just as bad, I don't personally like those odds.

D&D (2024) How do we feel about the new spells

The spell is labeled melee spell attack, not ranged. It hasn't ever come up so I've never had to make a final ruling since the text doesn't clarify. That works too.

D&D (2024) How do we feel about the new spells

Some people only seem to come here to trash the game so I think it depends on whether you thought the previous versions were any good at all. So you have to take some of this with a grain of salt. Overall I like the changes that I've seen so far. People might actually take True Strike now...

It wasn't my intent to make it personal and I'm not sure why you take it that way but sorry if it sounded like that. I think there are many valid approaches to TTRPGs and what works for one person may not work for someone else. I simply think that in most cases it becomes obvious whether...

There are a lot of things D&D doesn't accurately model and really can't because of how simplified attribute are. Climbing is just one. Still an interesting video.
