D&D General How much control do DMs need?

How about you make a perfectly designed RPG that doesn’t need any skill to play, an RPG that guarantees that anyone who plays it has tons of fun. You will become a millionaire.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I think it is apparent that money is a major motivator for LaNasa when it comes to his RPG endeavors. We see this in his attempt to charge people to use his dopey game ratings meter and the ridiculous prices for the compilation books he sells at the museum. I think that he very much wants to...

D&D 5E Armor idea would like some feedback was inspired by Nerdarchy video on armor that was posted on YT recently. " D&D Equipment: Armor Sucks! Let's Fix I

Anytime mechanical changes are discussed, the purpose of the changes should be spelled out because the purpose will determine what changes are appropriate and fun. So what is the problem you are trying to address? What is the goal you have in mind?

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

It certainly seems like an easy thing to fix because it's simple for a human to resolve. But what's simple for a human can often be painfully difficult for a computer to achieve. And even if this specific problem could easily be addressed doing so would only deal with the symptom rather than the...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

Another big issue that is vividly illustrated by Clint's very helpful transcripts is that an AI DM will not only make mistakes, but it will be unable to fix those mistakes. Human DM's make mistakes, including continuity errors about NPCs. But they can smoothly fix them so that they don't derail...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

The method for producing a competent AI DM sure does seem very straight forward: train it on a bunch of actual games, and then refine it by having users rate their enjoyment after each session. In practice, there are several major hurdles that are likely insurmountable. 1. The computer is...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

That's the thing with AI, it works great up until it crashes and burns in spectacular fashion. Now those times it works great make it seem like any issue can be ironed out with a little fine tuning, and for simple tasks that can be true. For instance, the example Cadence provided in the article...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

That's because it has no idea what "DM my character through x" means. It doesn't grasp that there is an adventure called "x" that it should read through and use as a basis for its responses to your statements and questions. It just sees "DM", "my character", and "x" and creates associations...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

ChatGPT can already be used to respond to basically anything. The issue is whether AI could ever produce an RPG experience as a GM that is fun. I highly doubt that because a computer has zero concept of what is fun let alone what a specific group of players would enjoy. It's like the episode of...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

When people have a conversation, they are aware of what had been said already. We use this awareness to help keep the conversation coherent, but we also use this awareness to avoid repeating the same things over and over again. And when we switch topics we can do so without constantly bringing...

WotC Wizard's Future Plans Has 3 Big Problems: Ft. The Professor of Tolarion Community College

I would assume they have a meaningful impact on sales, so I wonder if their opinions of the new Spelljammer were as negative as those of the critics here on enworld or were they more much more positive.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

You have absolutely no idea how much money they lost, let alone that it was "chump change". Take your cheap insults elsewhere.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

At a minimum they lost numerous DnDBeyond subscribers and certainly will lose some physical book sales. If their approach wasn't costing them significant amounts of money they would still be trying to eliminate the OGL. They definitely would not have put the 5e SRD into Creative Commons.

Roll for Combat reveals the terms of the "sweetheart deal" offered to 3pp

Sure, that's legitimate if you are actually negotiating. That is, trading offers back and forth. So you list the house at 850k and someone offers 650k; you counter with 800k, they respond with 700k, and then both agree to 750k. But that's not what WotC did. They simply dropped this contract in...
