In 4e, XP is used very effectively as a tool for determining encounter difficulty, even if you don't track XP for character advancement. I believe they're doing the same thing with Next.

You know, I haven't found it to be too much of a problem. Some people have trouble challenging the superpowered PCs; others find that combat grind gets bad. I think these reinforce each other. My PCs are level 25 and I've had a bit of trouble challenging them, but a few tweaks to my encounters...

WotBS is excellent. The 4e conversion... not so much. The encounters are poorly designed and it has has questionable additions to the adventures. But my (4e) group is still having a great time. We've been playing it for about two years. Our secret? Play the 3.5e version and build my own...

The print magazines had a lot of advertisements. How many actual pages of content did they have? I seem to remember them having 72 print pages, so assuming that about half were advertisements, 40 pages seems on par.
