(More) Problems with the Reaper Feat

Here's a question that might ruffle some feathers. What if the Slayer theme were restricted to weapon-using classes, or alternately, Reaper and any other Slayer benefits were restricted to weapon attacks? I'm just putting this out there as a What If; I too like the idea of a Sorceror Slayer. But...

How Much Houseruling Are You Willing To Do?

My message is the same, except that if my players try to break the game I'm more than happy just to throw harder encounters at them. I almost see it as a reward. My rule is more that you can play anything you want as long as it's a character and not just a bunch of numbers.

D&D 5E When will we be able to run a campaign with D&D Next?

I'm also very eager to start a campaign, to the extent that I'm thinking about building my own dungeon using the Bestiary and pregens. I'd do it except that I don't think my players really want to get attached to the pregens. We shall see.

Have you been using lighting conditions in the playtest?

We've used it a bit-- as mentioned in my playtest report, my wizard had to decide whether or not to Burning Hands into a dark room that the rogue may have been in. But I think our DM could have been stricter with the rules and nastier with the tactics. It was mostly not discussed except in...

How Much Houseruling Are You Willing To Do?

I voted for A Little. I'm one of the few DMs who doesn't think he knows better than the designers. (I mean that in the nicest way possible, fellow DMs! ;)) So I'm always hesitant to start house-ruling, especially when it comes to taking away character options, as I hate limiting my players in...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

Strongly agree with the OP. I used to think XP for GP was silly and shallow; now I see it as an essential part of the true dungeoncrawl experience. I was concerned during my 5e playtest that there was no concrete impetus to sneak around/diplomacize/otherwise avoid combat (aside from not getting...

    Obryn's Playtest Report

    Great report!

Questions from our sessions (updated for 9/7 session)

Totally agree. I specifically mentioned this as a problem in my playtest feedback.

Magic Vs AC is Very Poor Reasoning

I agree with the general consensus that magic vs. AC is fine, both because it speeds play and because it makes sense to me that your armor/dodge would help you avoid rays and bolts and whatnot. Saving throws are generally reserved for area attacks-- if you're caught in the middle of a fireball...

Playtest report - can 22 goblins defeat alcohol?

I would agree that the Guardian theme's shield ability isn't meant to be used to protect the guy who has the ability. I can see both sides about the RAW but I would rule based on assumed intent there. As for intoxication, I didn't notice it before but I do think it's an issue for the wizard...

    D&D 5E 5e "Skill" Checks

Yup, I think this is exactly what they're going for with 5e, and I quite like it too.

That's just awesome. I really wish I could XP you.

    Playtest Experience [SPOILERS, LONG]

Seriously, I got all excited just reading the thing. Sounds like D&D the way it's meant to be played. You'll be telling those stories for years to come. Bravo! (And bravo to your players, who are clearly a clever bunch of buggers.)

D&D 5E The cover of the 5E PHB: What I'd like to see

Definitely something that tells a story-- I think we all agree on that-- but I'd personally prefer something outside of combat. We know full well that D&D is a combat-heavy game; I'd love a reminder of the exploration elements right there on the cover. Plus it should have some personality...

What is exploration & why is it fun?

My favorite D&D moment from the last four years occurred while delving an ancient dwarven tomb. We found a seemingly abstract pattern carved into the wall. Points on it were labeled in Dwarven so it was clearly a map, but none of our characters spoke Dwarven. If we had, we would have figured it...

D&D 5E Protection from Chaos Part XI: The D&D Next Online Playtest Agreement

So wait, I'm still unclear (or maybe just incredulous) on one point: we're not supposed to be discussing the playtest at all outside of official channels? The lawyer guy advises not even talking to other playtest groups about your experience. So the entire ENWorld New Horizons forum is breaking...

    How to stop runners?

I think some of this has to do with your DM. Disclaimer: I definitely don't mean this to be any sort of insult or attack on your DM. I've struggled with similar questions as you bring up-- why wouldn't all the monsters just dogpile the PCs? But there are a lot of other ways for a DM to run...

    So I played tonight...

I would be very interested to read a report of a playtest in which you followed all the rules exactly as written.
