    Build, Then Describe?

I use Tact-Tiles, and I really need to get out of the habit of drawing the room before I describe it. Inevitably, players pepper me with questions as I'm drawing, which makes it hard to focus and is a little annoying. I want to give detailed descriptions in a narrative way, but I usually end up...

What's happening with 3e?? Open Design, Necromancer Games, Sinister Adventures, Monte

I would love to have access to dungeonaday.com, but 10 bucks a month is too expensive. I only play D&D once or twice a month. I suppose I could subscribe, get some cool maps and then cancel after a month, but I will always want to check out the new stuff. Le sigh.

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

A very detailed and accurate explanation of my point, thank you. :) You are absolutely right. I do admire the absolute transparency of magic item benefits, and the effort to ensure that items are fairly distributed with something interesting for all. And yes, I absolutely could sift through the...

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

I forgot about hybrids, and don't have any books with them. I was curious to take a look, though.

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

I am pretty disappointed with the lack of multiclassing. I know that it often caused issues in previous editions, and I know that in lieu of multiclassing 4E simply has way more classes and paragon paths. But I still miss it. I just quoted the second part because I want to toss it in my sig. :)...

    Warlord: Your experiences

I am thinking of playing one of these guys soon, so I wanted to hear from people who have played them or seen them in play. Are they fun? Boring? Sufficiently tactical or just gimmicky? What's your favorite build and why?

[D&D 4E] Looking for players and/or DM in San Diego, CA

-- Adult gaming group (ages range from 25 to 40) looking for more adults to play a new 4E game once or twice per month on weekends. Times/dates/campaign setting/DM/number of players all up in the air at the moment, and thus flexible. -- Typically we enjoy heavy to moderate role-playing with an...

Feat Tax and Why It Harms the System

The DM in the game I play banned the expertise feats and baked in attack upgrades to compensate. As someone who plays an avenger in an ongoing campaign, I did feel bummed that I had to take a feat to fix the fact that charging and opportunity attacks were pathetic compared to my Wis-based...

    Party just doesn't work

One thing that we do that works well for us is if someone's taking a really long time to act, he just delays until he knows what to do. The DM sometimes prompts players to delay, and sometimes they say "I delay" themselves when their turns come up. Either way, just pull them out of the...

    Party just doesn't work

I have no idea what this means, but it sounds like you have some frustrated players. Might be time for the group to discuss what's going on and what can be done to make the game more fun for everyone.

    Party just doesn't work

If they are having fun, you're doing it right. If you as DM are frustrated with the pace of the game, you have the power to speed it up. Maybe those rogues notice the suspicious strangers hanging around outside their hideout and decide to get the drop on them instead of waiting to be attacked.

    Is there a social obligation?

If one of my players was intentionally drafting an ineffective character mechanically I'd ask him why, discuss it, and if he was dead set on continuing I'd warn him that the other players might not take kindly to it. But I'd let him do it. If the same player played that PC ineptly on purpose...

    Are you a refluffer?

I was hoping that this isn't what your argument boiled down to, but it is. You're saying we play the game wrongbad. I don't feel that's a point worth arguing over, so this is where I bow out of the discussion.

    Are you a refluffer?

The way we describe spells and powers has no bearing on the rules mechanic. If I want to describe my wizard waving around a tuba and spitting sunflower seeds to cast fireball, it makes absolutely no difference because the mechanic hasn't changed. It's just fluff. This whole thread is just...

    Are you a refluffer?

Fixed that for ya. :p We'll have to agree to disagree, friend. I think the system allows for a lot more narrative variance than you give it credit.

    Are you a refluffer?

It just comes down to the way you want to present magic in your world. There's nothing wrong with having magic be a science with predictable causes and effects, and there's nothing wrong with it being something vast, unquantifiable and user-defined. I prefer the latter approach because my...

    Are you a refluffer?

Actually, think about it for a second. Your PC wizard knows what he himself can do. He's got a good idea of the extent of his master's powers, perhaps. He doesn't necessarily know what the PC cleric can do, or what the NPC wizard he just met can do. He certainly doesn't know the exact powers of...

    Are you a refluffer?

Magic is mysterious and nobody is a complete expert on the endless variations of freakish creatures living in the corners and cracks of the world. But really, I just like treating D&D like an episode of Lost. :)

    Are you a refluffer?

As far as I'm concerned, descriptions of monsters, spells, powers, special moves, magic items and their effects are all completely discretionary and subject to re-imagination. Hell, to me that's what D&D is---taking stuff from the books and personalizing it to make it your own.
