    D&D 5E August 2nd playtest package "fix"

Looks like there were a number of relatively minor changes. No more "Worn" or "Critical" properties of weapons. Flail is Martial. There are different damage dice for great club, mace, quarterstaff, great sword, maul, pike, trident, longbow and the hand and light crossbows. Spear is versatile...

What's wrong with the way fields of lore work?

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

I think the crack of a whip would make one hell of a sneak attack (SURPRISE!), but that's not the point. I don't want to use a whip unless it fits my character concept, which it does not. If I want to attack something 10 feet away with 1d4 damage, I'll just use a throwing knife (dart) or a...

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

Thanks for the advice, but with all due respect, the metagameyness of using a whip just to get sneak attack damage with reach makes me throw up in my mouth a little. I loved Halfling Weapon Training, and I'm loathe to let go of the sling/ dagger/ short sword combination, even when mechanical...

D&D 5E Barbarian vs Fighter vs Monk

I'd be interested to see how the Rogue stacks up.

D&D 5E The Barbarian has been Nerfed YET AGAIN. Where is Thick Hide?

I gotta be honest, it sounds like your character concept is just not the same vision that WotC has as they are developing a Barbarian. It sounds like you're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. And I think it's unfair to blame WotC for that.

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

I'm playing a Rogue for the playtest, and I really agree with the bow/crossbow assessments. On a slightly broader note, it seems like I'm being pushed into using Rapier/Hand Crossbow, or pushed into using Two-Weapon Fighting, and I don't like that.

D&D 5E 5e should include roleplaying incentives as a module.

For what it's worth, I like the idea of the game rewarding good roleplaying, I'm just not sure how to implement that in D&D. I played an extended World of Darkness campaign many years ago, and at the end of every session, I was subjectively rewarded for good roleplaying with a few experience...

D&D 5E Magic Item Slots in D&D Next

I think the current method is the right method for this system. No slots, common sense, and attunement make a simple system. 5e is trying to balance coolness with simplicity, and I think it's working as needed for magic item use.

    D&D 5E D&D, for kids?

I hope I'm able to play D&D with my daughter when she gets older. You just have to scale back the content to their level. There are fairy tales designed for kids with a splash of violence here and there - slay the dragon, fell the black knight, what have you. And kids' imaginations are...

    D&D 5E Skill idea 3,142

It's pretty tricky accommodating both systems. I agree it's important to keep the same DCs, though. Even altering them on the DM's side could cause complications that I believe could be resolved with a proper system. I think the best way to handle the difference is to start from the point of...

    D&D 5E Downtime Mechanics?

I'm wary of codifying this because I think it will lead to some campaign restraint on the part of GMs. If it is included, I would much prefer an optional module. Some campaigns are quite long, and intend to be so. But some will try to keep the action going as the team follows the trail of the...

    D&D 5E Barbarian subclass?

I'm of the opinion that Barbarians should be subclasses of Fighters. Perhaps it's just a naming thing, but I doubt that's it. For the record, I've hated the name "Fighter" for many years now (doesn't the Wizard fight, too?). But if we assume that Fighters are the class for the masters of...

D&D 5E Time to switch from Wis to Cha for representing Willpower

I'm actually hoping they keep the ability score-based saving throws and do away with "Willpower" as a concept. As has been argued, different situations could be split appropriately into different ability-based saves. The will to resist charm could fall under Charisma, the will to resist...

    D&D 5E Desired Spell Changes

I meant unpredictable in that you can't rely on it phasing you into the material plane every round. Perhaps a stipulation that you must reserve up to 10 feet of movement in order to take advantage of the teleportation would solve the dilemma.

    D&D 5E Desired Spell Changes

That would defeat its purpose as a low-level, unpredictable teleportation spell.

D&D 5E Time to switch from Wis to Cha for representing Willpower

I'd support it, though in Next at least, there's currently no such thing as Willpower. Certain arguments can be made that Willpower could be represented by Wisdom, but given my traditional understanding of the two Abilities, I don't think I could give a full representation of those arguments. I...

D&D 5E Are quadratic spellcasters still a problem?

Should cantrips be more powerful than 1st-level slots? I guess that depends on a number of factors, some of which might ultimately boil down to opinion. For example, I think spells should scale with caster level. One underlying assumption I try to make: If Cleric Allen is more powerful than...

D&D 5E Are quadratic spellcasters still a problem?

I think part of the problem comparing "Wizard" with "Archer" is that "Archer" is not a class. A Rogue has Sneak Attack, a Fighter has Expertise, A Ranger has Deadly Strike, etc. I think different people may be comparing different classes' stats. Maybe different bows, too, I don't know. I don't...
