    D&D 5E Income

Investments in all and sundry. Taprooms, whorehouses, trading ships, bands of highwaymen. Smash a bunch of bandits, kill their leader, appoint a new leader, give them all better equipment in return of ___% of their profits. Collect quarterly bandit dividends.

D&D 5E Which feats would you change, why would you change them & how would you change them?

Grappler; I allow the PC with the Grappler feat to Throw/Slam enemies to the ground. Either make a Shove attack, or roll to Pin/Takedown/Slam/whatever from the Grapple. PC rolls d20+prof bonus+Athletics bonus, attack does a 1d4+STR mod. My reasoning is that, if a Tavern Brawler can do a d4...

D&D 5E Adapting Old Modules: Question About Level Ranges

Personally, I'm lazy, so I'd just steal all the fluff (plot, characters, everything) and switch out the CR's of enemies and DC's of all checks to a party appropriate level. That might be a rough fix, but I found that it works out okay.

    D&D 5E Bats and Silence

"this seemed reasonable and 'out of the box', so I went with it*. That's essentially the motto of the good DM, in my opinion.

    D&D 5E Battlerager Barbarian Question

I'd allow it. I like seeing players come up with novel solutions to problems, as long as they aren't too ridiculous. It's really just a minor boost to a niche ability, but could make for a huge increase of fun and roleplay. Now, wait until the Battlerager gets those spikes silver plated, and...

D&D 5E Need some input on using low level enemies

From what I've seen in 5E, the CR is an okay guide, but matters a lot less than DM tactics. Whenever I make an effort to play a monster the way I think they would fight (canny tactics from bandits, infuriating pest-fighting from goblins, single minded aggression by monsters and constructs...

    D&D 5E Party Optimization

As someone who hates the idea of party optimization, I would tell you to play whatever you want. It makes the game more interesting, in my opinion. And, RP wise, it works quite well. "Party Optimization" usually means that one or two people call dibs on what they want to play, and other people...

    D&D 5E Orcish Magic Belt

Wailing Belt A string of shrunken head attached to a belt. Once per day, as a bonus action, the wearer can activate the heads, who will weep, scream, curse their fate, roll their eyes, prophesy doom on the wearers enemies, etc. Any creature in a 20 foot radius must make a ____ saving throw...

Not using Grid / minis / pawns

I like grid based combat for a number of reasons; It's easier to keep track of the action. Sometimes the DM isn't positioning and terrain well, or a player just isn't getting it. A quick sketch or placement can remedy that. It also allows people to make a quick dash from the table to check on...

    D&D 5E NPC classes/levels

I personally wouldn't. As others have said, the PC's are in the spotlight, the NPC's are supporting cast. I like using the stats in the Monster Manual for quick and easy NPC's, though, so if you wanted to "level" one up, you could simply pick a tougher stat block to use. After a few sessions...

    D&D 5E Random Spellbook Generator

I've used this list of 'standard' spellbooks I borrowed from City-of-Iron in the past, whether to speed up the creation of a level 1 wizard, or as possible loot in adventures (found in bookcases, etc). They seem pretty balanced, and I liked the idea of widely used texts within the magic...

D&D 5E GRAPPLING, FEAT AND DEX

Agreed. Dex is important for grappling, but pinging grappling off the Athletics skill really keeps the game balanced, so it's a decent trade off. As an aside, I house ruled the Grappling feat slightly to appease my inner grappling nerd. My players who take the Grappler feat have the ability to...

D&D 5E Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

This is kind of what I did. I was running a few one-shots for a couple friends, and when they got to Level 3 I had them invited as guests of honour to a Halfling Feast Day in Greenest. As they slept off their revelries in the Inn, I had the attack begin on Greenest, with kobolds bursting through...

D&D 5E Average damage or rolled damage?

I always roll attack and damage rolls in the open (just so that the players know I'm not babying/murdering them). I kind of like the pucker factor involved in combat rolls; is the fighter lucky enough to come out of this with only a scratch, or is the Bugbear's club crushing his head like a...

D&D 5E What setting is best for a first time DM?

Forgotten Realms; simply because it's currently the most supported setting and is the archetype of generic fantasy. I would caution to not overload the players with too much background lore; only give them what is necessary or what is asked for. Get the 5th edition Starter Set and start...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

I'm going to take an unorthodox approach to these new fighting styles. I'm going to let my players use them, and witness them in action at an average game at my table, before completely losing my shirt over these new choices.

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

I really like the new Ranger archetype. It fits the guerilla warfare/ hit and run style that I always thought the Ranger should have. When I got into 5e, I was adamantly against the idea of too much new content, but these UA add-ons are great. As long as the quality stays at this level, and...

    D&D 5E EK vs Battlemaster/Abjurer

I was thinking of this as well. I don't understand why the EK has to be restricted to Evocation and Abjuration spells... is there some sort of game balance issue? I've got an upcoming EK in my home game, and I'll likely house-rule it so that he picks only two schools to cast from. (personally, I...

D&D 5E Heat Metal Rules Interp / Minor Nerf

I don't see the problem with Heat Metal unfairly targeting a habitually armored character; it makes sense for the spell to exist within the universe the game occurs in, so I think it's fair game to use it. It's similarly unfair when the sub-sub-sub-basement of the dungeon is in complete...
