I Discovored D&D Later In Life Than I Would Have Liked And I Worry That....

45 now. been playing since 1979. I've played lots of video games over the years, but somehow, they are not pulling me like they once did. However, <your diety here> help you if you mess with my tabletop game night. I fight tooth and nail for that. My friends and I are already lamenting how "real...

Looking for a Greek-style rpg system (or an equivalent universal system)

also I would point out Mythras (or Mythras Imperative) and Sarinaya's Curse, which is a very greek style adventure and brp derived game

D&D 5E The Shield Spell and Spell Points

I would switch it up and not hit his AC so much. Pretty straight forward. Combined arms :)

I host a tabletop gaming advice podcast, and I need YOUR questions!

How do you make a dynamic combat encounter? Illusions - how do they work?, and where are they useful? How do I deal with players who appear to only want to win? How important is session 0 for a campaign? How do I figure out what sort of character works for me?

Where are all the great spy RPGs?

Leverage actually has a spy supplement called KRYPTOS. It has a mission generator and advice for running one. Leverage also has a one on one supplement for running solo games, and KRYPTOS specifically mentions that the genre is good for that I'm a giant fan of Black Seven, not only because...

    D&D 5E Crawford on Stealth

While I'm not going to complain about the 5e stealth rules, I am pretty happy with the ones in Black Seven, a very small and cheap RPG that specializes in stealth games like Deus Ex and Thief. It runs stealth missions somewhat closer to a Skill Challenge I would say, and failed stealth checks...

    D&D 5E Crawford on Stealth

edit: don't need 5 people saying the same thing. though all the examples in the exploration chapter are perception :)

    D&D 5E Crawford on Stealth

I guess I wonder if this notion of the passive being the floor applies to every skill in the right circumstances. Passive nature - you can automatically identify any creatures that are identifiable with a roll below your passive skill, for example. If this is the case, then it seems that a...

D&D 5E Back Up Character / Help Me Choose - Poll

Alright then, voted wizard, and I will specifically say lore wizard. It will provide you with options for days. You will be able to maintain solid damage by making sure you don't hit immunities and resistances (even if you use one of the more sensible house rules that remove force and radiant...

D&D 5E Back Up Character / Help Me Choose - Poll

My group also has a hexblade pact of the blade warlock and discovered that e blast is better. We are similarly sad. Our warlock player doesn't care though :) What do you dislike about limited spell slots?

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Well, and the multitarget fireball. Also note, none of them have the same save, including the silent image investigation and levitation's attack function. I think that is more the point - save appropriateness can really impact those save or nothing spells quite a lot. You don't need to have an...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I will take your guides as gospel and you can't stop me! ;) I would like to point out that the consideration is dependent on saves, and these fluctuate per creature. Slow is nice because it multitargets, but it's also third level. So is Hypnotic pattern. They have the same save. They have close...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I think this last point illustrates where a certain class of spells really shines - when the character has a bit of knowledge about the target. The bridge works if you know something about the target you can use to lure him across, even if it is simple greed. The mirror trick failed because the...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I ran into a situation this last game where I felt that I wanted more damage, actually, contrary to the normal god-wizard way. We were down one damage dealer in the party (paladin of vengeance) and I rolled poorly on a couple of ice knives (lore-transformed to fire battle axes) against the...

Interesting encounters - what is the secret sauce?

One ring I recently learned is to have your monsters run from combat if it makes sense. I had a party whack a couple of ogres quickly, and their chief saw. Then the Mage dropped darkness on him thinking they would leave him in a bad way. He ran. When they dropped the darkness, they...

    The price of a horse.

This is always a tough balance to maintain. I am seeing this now with my 5e game where I play. It feels very simplistic to me, which is good in some ways and on some nights. On others, it's sort of boring because I have nothing to sink my teeth into. I've experienced the opposite, though more...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Plant growth might be a counter example here. to be clear, I don't have a problem with rocks or bushes or whatever - even 2d cutouts of paper that look something like fog :)

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

it is, but the smoke is not. agreed on all of this. I don't mind people doing it, but they do have to stay within the bounds. Also, they should expect that it will get dispelled at some point, and future illusions get harder to do against the same folks. Not normally an issue.
