D&D 5E Customizing Backgrounds Core Rule - Public Service Announcement

That's not what the rules are telling you. That's how you're interpreting them though, which is fine. The rules say you can create a background with any two languages/tool proficiencies. I can think up a number of backgrounds that would align with training in poisons before becoming an adventurer.

D&D 5E Customizing Backgrounds Core Rule - Public Service Announcement

Absolutely. When I DM I'm totally open to it. I've played with more than one DM both IRL and online who when asked were just a straight "nope" on the custom background. It boggles the mind that they'd not even be open to the idea or discussion of a core rule I think they must be coming from a...

D&D 5E Customizing Backgrounds Core Rule - Public Service Announcement

They look like they are pretty good at brewing up troubles with those skills and features though! :) I agree with the OP though. Some DM's seem very put out by the very concept of NOT selecting one of the pre-written Backgrounds and resistant to customized backgrounds despite this very core...

D&D 5E Do you know the feeling of de-feat? (Playing a featless game.)

I always use Feats in my groups. They are fun.

D&D 5E Enough is Enough: WotC needs to add "domain spells" to *existing* sorcerer subclasses

the keystone component isn't that the ritual spells are so useful in and of themselves, it's that the wizard can have them in the spellbook, never prepare them, but still use them all day long. By 3rd level you should have 10 spells prepared as a Cleric at least. 3 lvl + 3 Mod + 4 domain = 10...

D&D 5E To MC or not MC? That is the question!

min/maxing to eek out DPR is different than making your character good at the things their supposed to be good at doing (optimizing). Sometime people do both, but they are squares and rectangles. Multiclassing for me is usually about story. That said there are other games that I play in that...

How would you optimize??(edited for clarity)

This is their biggest drawback. Honestly I want to like Path of the Beast. I do like it, but it does have some lacks.

D&D General Explaining D&D classes using the Marvel Cinematic Universe

You have a point about Black Panther being more "monk-like" than Spiderman. He can be a monk and royalty, he just has the Noble background is all! Spiderman's mobility and things like slow fall and such are very Monk like. Give him Magic Initiate (Druid) and you can use Thornwhip to move around...

D&D General Explaining D&D classes using the Marvel Cinematic Universe

I love those images. There are a bunch from back in 3.5 days of Fantasy Avengers. They inspired me to do a complete build of the Avengers team (first movie) back in 3.5 days. Super fun challenge. Course, it was much easier to represent Thor as a god AND a barbarian/fighter back then what with...

D&D 5E To MC or not MC? That is the question!

Multiclassing for Demi-humans in AD&D worked so much better from an optimization standpoint. Not necessarily a narrative one. And it didn't work for humans. I like the modern version of it because it allows my character to grow and explore things in the fiction of the world and have it...

D&D 5E Monk, What is Your Martial Code?

Just because there's no monastery or family doesn't mean there isn't a retired monk who lives in the village or just outside it as a hermit and saw promise in a young man. Very Obi-wan/Luke vibe. Personally I would find, without a mentor/monastery learning to fight like a monk has to in order...

D&D General Explaining D&D classes using the Marvel Cinematic Universe

See the more I think about it the more I swap them. Cpt. Marvel as a Warlock because of her Eldritch Blasting, Scarlet Witch has very much a sorcerer theme to me. Thor totally worships himself at the beginning :P He's a good example of a tempest cleric to me. You could argue some levels of...

D&D 5E To MC or not MC? That is the question!

Fully allow it and Feats. Usually people actually DON'T multiclass, but there are no restrictions on it other than the stat requirements in the PHB.
