    [WotC_Logan] Why is Tiamat Huge?

thanks for the clarification *considers* Okay, I'll accept that. The idea of stats derived from miniatures still rankles a bit, but that logic I can't argue with. Fan service FTW. :)

Who's on first? (Forked Thread: [WotC_Logan] Why is Tiamat Huge?)

Deleted due to false premise. Nothing to see here, move along. :)

Who's on first? (Forked Thread: [WotC_Logan] Why is Tiamat Huge?)

Game before minis. If the minis are what the rules are based around then, hey, guess what, you're playing a miniatures game. Understand, I do not hate 4e, but some of the decisions WotC has made leading up to and since releasing it make Absolutely No Sense to me.

    [WotC_Logan] Why is Tiamat Huge?

Huge? That is (per 4e) - one size category larger than a Beholder, Dire Boar, Carriorn Crawler or a freakin' unicorn. and the same size category as a Balor, Glabrazu, a [I]common[I] Dracolich (neither blackfire nor runescribed) or an elder (but not an ancient) black dragon or for that matter a...

    [WotC_Logan] Why is Tiamat Huge?

Wait...so (in part) the stats for a God, in game, were determined by WotCs capacity to sell a miniature of said God? WAT?

Not much interest in the Draconomicon?

Speaking for myself, no there really isn't. But then I wasn't terribly interested (read: didn't read or buy) in the 3e Draconomicon either. By way of actually attempting to be helpful, I swear there were a few posts about this about ten - twelve hours ago, not that I can find them now......

How Many Battles Per Gaming Session?

I went with 2 - 3 as an average but that doesn't tell the full story. Our sessions tend to average 3-5 hours; how many fights a session has is greatly dependent on where we are in the game and what's happening. There's been one fight in the last three sessions (though admittedly that was a...

    Dragons, Dragons, Dragons

"get off my lawn you &#*@ kids!" In 16 years running the same homebrew I think dragons have come up perhaps four times. Only one of those was as a combat encounter. Generally speaking, dragons IMC are part of the local culture and geography but not something you actually fight. (People...

Do you read RPG books all the way through?

Not anymore - once upon a time I felt it was somehow bad GMing to not have read all of my books cover to cover. Really the only ones I read all the way through are those that are, well, interesting enough to do so (And RPG books very very seldom fall into that category for me. Though the 1e DMG...

When playing D&D I use battlemats...

No. In the Eberron game I was playing in before I moved yes, but that was the GM's perogative. When I'm running a game I don't need the additional headache. Of course, I don't use minis either.

    Castle Amber - your experiences?

My absolute favorite old school adventure. Period, hands down. I've played all the way through this and run it straight through about three times. It also introduced me to Clark Ashton Smith and so it gets double points for that. (If you're curious, you can read a fair bit about Averogine...

Dwellers of the Forbidden City - your experiences?

Played this one once, never had an inclination to run it especially (this one doesn't hold up terribly well IMHO). It was pretty much a non-stop slaughterfest (my favorite bits are the lengthy extended .... was it a canyon? entrance). By the time we got to the city proper there were only two...

The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth - your experiences?

Brutal little adventure. We lost half the party by the time we took the Vampire down and everyone had lost levels. We had to back out and hang with the gnomes a few times just to recover lost hp etc. The first time I played through this, for some reason, the DM made the tribesmen EWOKS...

Keep on the Borderlands - your experiences?

Fancy a bit of thread necromancy, neh? I've played or run this thing so many times it all tends to run together. The last time was as DM sometime in the early 90s, which happens to be the only time anyone went to the Keep or actually finished the adventure. Though I recall trying to find all...

Does Your Heather Have Two Mommies?

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIinteresting. I must admit I thought it was an illusion spell, but nope it's definitely a transformation. I think (given the quote above) a lot of GMs might well rule being able to get someone pregnant to be a "special ability" (or, heaven forbid, a "special attack" :P )...

Real-world squad level tactics in D&D?

Might find this interesting. Standard orders for those serving during the French and Indian War. Neat stuff. http://www.phcadet.com/pdf%20files/Standing%20Orders%20and%20Creed.pdf

Was there a real need for a fourth ed.? Or would tweaking 3.5 have done it for you?

Unnecessary. If they'd fixed turning and shored up a few things (like grapple) I'd have been happy as clams. New editions of RPGs generally tend to fall into the category marked "regrettable but necessary evil" for me. I mean, if I have that much of a problem with a rules set, I don't wait...

    The mythical ideal of 1E?

I agree with a lot of this - my recollection is that 2e always felt like house ruled 1e...at least until all the Complete books inundated us with kits and so on. In my memory, 2e didn't really have a distinctive seperate identity from 1e until several years after it's release. Having said...

Have you seen an Aboleth in game?

No, not since, sometime in 1e. Which is kind of surprising really. If it matters, I haven't played with miniatures *also* since 1e, so I doubt the notion that the lack of a mini had anything to do with it. ;)

Preferred Format: Ret. to the Temple of Elem. Evil or Exped. to the Ruins of Greyhawk

I despise the old format (RttTEE) but I'm not fond of the newer format either. The constant sound of the GM page flipping in the middle of combat is ungood. Especially when I'm GMing. ;)
