GMing Mistakes You’ve Made in the Past

Another one: Letting girlfriends or boyfriend or husbands or wives play the game. This sounds good....if your playing a board game. Or if your playing an RPG just like a simple board game. Or if your RPG will just be a casual fun time. If you play to really play an RPG.....it just about...

GMing Mistakes You’ve Made in the Past

So many..... 1. Allowing anyone to play...though really letting anyone join any social activity. Once I would just say "everyone welcome". And have horrible times. Soon I learned the actions of the gamers I did not like and even the key words that they use. And then filtered them out of my...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Yes. Though really they can do so anytime that is not game time. I don't waste game time. For a great many players the idea that they have two 'active' characters at the same time is some sort of taboo. I found it to work out great. First, the problem players often don't even TRY their dumb...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

    1. I do see this as a big point. A lot of players hate the idea that the DM gets to tell them what to do. So the "no DM tells me what to do". 2. This....is more dependent on things. Jerk players that hate the DM can ruin any game, and there is a HUGE underbase of jerk players that join games...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

I could re post old post where someone did post something exactly like I said.....just in the "sandbox words". But it is such an up hill battle. Once I said at least one of every player in a group will cheat....and plenty on the internet swore that in years of gaming they had never met or even...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Well, that is odd. It is very common. It is just the bare honest I use. If I were to say a DM that "Runs a fair and balanced game and is a fan of the players and characters", you would see plenty of people say "that is me". I agree with you here. I love being a player that does their own...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

A lot of games have the DM be just a player. It is also a popular game play style. The problem I have is this sounds like a normal game. As the 'anti sandbox' would be a jerk DM where the DM ran the PCs. "okay, your characters walk forward and fall into the trap...ahahaha...fooled you!"...

How Fantastical Do You Like Your Fantasy World?

I like it very fantastical. Weird, strange, uncanny to the extreme. I keep the players and characters as Clueless.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Sorry, I got lost with all the words. I did say player lead game where the players have all the power and the dm-player just does what they are told. That fits everything you posted. Odd I mentioned some Sandboxes being games about Nothing and it upset people.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

As I said, the players are concerned about the limiting factor of the DM. This is true for a lot of DMs, even more so new or casual DMs. Right: this is the whole point. Anything the DM makes up about the game world limits the players. Even if you write "character is unlikely to help", many...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

So the problem here is this is just a normal game. So what makes it a Sandbox? Again, this is a normal game. What makes it a Sandbox? And yet again this is a normal game. There are only two points: 1.The hate for anything pre made by the DM as many players hate the power the DM has to...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

A hex crawl is almost always Linear. But sure you can Sandbox any game. Yes...okay...this is what is always said. So: Okay a DM creates a massive game world.. So the game starts at 6PM. At 6:01 the players pick a goal or something to do. Okay....so....at 6:02 after the players have made...

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

Yes, not sure why that would matter?

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Okay? I always say 'most' or 'nearly' to be clear. I guess you could post your sandbox style game. I'd guess it would be close to my examples.

    An examination of player agency

This is a big one. There are a lot of people that just have this problem at anyone has some level of authority over them and they rebel like crazy.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

No. Time is valuable in my games. If something would be a waste of time it does not happen. So weak, pointless encounters can not happen in my game. For example I forbid 7th level characters from getting into a "cool bar fight" with 0 level commoners.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

It is better if you want a more pure sandbox game where nobody says any details. The player-dm does not get to ask the players of characters questions: they just keep quiet and do as they are told. The sword is where the players want it to be or where the game rules or fiction or chance want...
  18. B

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Why? It is how Linear Games work. Like I said, a Pure Sandbox is just chaos. The players simply do random things as the DM-player says "yes" can creates the world right in front of the characters. That is why few sandbox games are pure. As soon as a play sets a goal and detail is added to...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

This is true, but goes way beyond just Linear or Sandbox. The Classic Traditional DM creates Encounters for the players to have. Quite often ones with very specific flavors. A spooky encounter, for example. The Modern Player-DM wants to sit back and do as little as possible while the...
