D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

Could you please take this discussion on the ephemera of what makes a historian (or not) and make it its own thread? I think you're derailing a conversation about a very specific—and important—topic with it.

D&D (2024) Could we get a Bloomburrow (Redwall) setting for 5.24?

I'm so excited about Bloomburrow that I've been following the previews with excitement and I'm planning on attending pre-release for the first time since... OG Eldraine? Also, in case you don't know, there's an indie designer out there doing "Planeshift" supplements for all the new and old...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

That's not what I said. I'm not justifying Gygax or giving him the benefit of the doubt. I was just pointing out that sexism and misogyny (as well as many other of our society's ails) are systemic issues, not individual ones.

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

For sure, but we're talking about men's privilege, which is often granted only to them if they're also cis/gender-conforming and white. Trans and BIPOC men have suffered immense discrimination and oppression, so that's why I honed in on the most privileged ones which, so it happens to be the...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

All this information is disappointing but unsurprising. Still, we shouldn't congratulate ourselves too much: things haven't changed that much in 50 years. Gygax was a mysoginist and a sexist because he grew up, just like the rest of us, in a patriarchal, sexist, and mysoginistic society. The...

Is Evil Genius Games Doubling Down On NFTs & Blockchain?

I could try to explain... But Dan Olsen already did in a much more detailed and entertaining way than I ever could tl;dw NFTs/"AI" = MLM schemes for middle class cis white men

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but my whole-hearted recommendation goes to Masks: A New Generation. Masks is my favorite supers RPG, basically because it centers on the drama of being a superhero (young one) instead of modeling specific power sets with points or something like that. What's...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Maybe normal silver is, what about moonsilver, the valued metal brought from the moon itself and highly valued by craftspeople and jewelers alike? It's fantasy, after all. We're supposed to invent and think outside the box, aren't we?

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Perhaps you're right. I was thinking about asking for fully silver weapons (not only silvered), thus making silver very valuable in Ravenloft.

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

I'd only limit the access to silver weapons. Magic weapons or spells shouldn't get any benefit against classic horror monsters' resistances/immunities, IMO. A vampire shouldn't care more about magic missile than they do the swing of a steel sword.

D&D General Tangent from Vecna - How Many Actually Good Adventures Are There?

My favorite adventures I've run throughout the years include: Night of the Walking Dead (I've run it three times for different groups and every time it's been a Gothic horror blast) A Dark and Stormy Knight (I've run it two or three times, for different groups and in different systems. Always...

Trailer Arcane Season 2 - Teaser trailer

Thanks for sharing! It doesn't look as good as the first season, but I sure will be binge watching come November. I'm glad they're going to wrap up the story in two seasons. Excited to see where it goes!

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

I was actually thinking about making those changes without changing the monsters' CR. So that way you could still have werewolves at CR 3 and vampire spawn at CR 5, but have it so they feel difficult enough to put some fear in the hearts of the players facing them.

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Regarding D&D vs. Ravenloft I mostly agree but, if I had to use D&D for Ravenloft I'd use 5E as is (Level Up really, but you know what I mean) and, instead, make the monsters really tough. Werewolf? Resistant to all harm except from silver and regen 10 that can only be stopped by silver. Normal...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

I want to add, once again, that I really appreciate your work and reviews @der_kluge While other people may want to bury their heads in the sand, metaphorically speaking, these reviews align with my own experience running some of these modules. I ran Feast of Goblyns as one of my first Ravenloft...

D&D 5E Advanced D&D or "what to minimally fix in 5E?"

I lowkey love this SO much. I still have friends that sadly only play 5e, but I can't summon the will to run it for them anymore. I've been searching everywhere for a "sensible" 5e (killing any and all sacred cows in service of ease-of-use) and this is the best attempt I've seen in a while...

AI Art Removed From Upcoming Terminator RPG Book

Well, you're ignoring the first thing I said: created by humans. Collage made by humans = Art (inspo + craft). The same with remixes and reedits and all the other strawmen you set up. My qualifications are being a professional writer for 15 years, friend and lover to many real artists, and a...
