Shadowdark RPG: An Interview with Kelsey Dionne

I’ve pledged on this Kickstarter. I really like Kelsey’s fresh approach to adventure presentation and this new RPG rules set looks like a lot of fun. No dark vision? Thank the gods!

D&D General When is the last time you DMed a game?

Not run a game since late last summer. I need to get a local group started, but the Boardgame Meetup I used to recruit from last time has pretty much disbanded since covid began. I should probably check in with the organizers and see what’s up…

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Poor choice of phrasing on my part!

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I guess we really do see things very differently. Sure I have some broad strokes of what the major NPCs that the players have heard of or encountered want, but I’m mostly reacting to what the players desires are. I try to hold the reality loosely so that I can adapt to what the players are...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Of course not. I’ve been clear that this in relation to climactic encounters where a certain level of drama needs (in my DMing opinion) to be attained to deliver a satisfying challenge. And I certainly let my players have a clever easy victory. :) They once whisked a storm giant out from under...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

It's my understanding (and I may be wrong, so apologies in advance!) that you run very much beer & pretzels type of games (most of which don't run for very long?) So I can understand your not really worrying too much about the dramatic weight of a particular encounter, there'll be another one...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Yeah I guess my table made their disappointment very clear when a boss encounter was an anticlimax.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I used to as well until I figured out the problem was the HP was just way to low :) So it's not like I'm saying this is how I play. I'm just saying that I don't see the harm in tweaking things on the fly as you're learning how to dial in the right challenge level for your table.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Sure and you're a very experienced DM. I was fudging the HP as I tried to figure how to get the game to perform at the expected level for my table and I guess I wasn't willing to let a disappointing encounter (and potential climax to a chapter) just fail to deliver due to my lack of...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I guess I don't understand why my coming up with something 5 hours ago or 5 seconds ago makes any difference. For me this is a very fuzzy game where the adventure is the thing that is most important to sustain and by adventure I don't mean "my story" I mean the fun being had at the table. The...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

The only thing that's been established is this is a tough foe so expect a tough fight (and if it turns out I've woefully under stat'ed the tough foe, well it's going to get tougher than I thought, but not what my players thought!) That's the thing I guess. I'm trying to deliver on the...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Yeah - I guess my players don't know that much about my foes? I certainly don't say things like "the NPC is at half hit points" :) So really there's nothing much to learn except what kind of attacks it has and how hard it is to hit - which seems reasonable. But how many HP it has remaining...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I dunno, I guess my players know that I'm making it all up? The one thing I haven't made up is the result of the dice roll which is why that seems sacrosanct while the rest is up for editing before or during the session. :) To follow on from that - is it OK for a DM to come up with a new...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I guess I see my role as delivering an exciting experience and if I'm not doing that in a pivotal session (like a boss battle) then I better address it. As I said, after experimenting turning the HP dial (generally upwards) in order to provide the expected challenge I eventually settled on max...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Yep I started doing it with bosses after the debacle that was the Black Spider encounter at the end LMoP. That was such a disappointing finale. Eventually I learned to just give max HP and things went better. We’re constantly talking about turning the D&D dials to make the game work for a table...

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Nope, because HP is a measure of a number of factors and I just wanted my NPCs to be luckier than they were (I am the low roller after all :) )

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

I’ve adjusted HP on the fly until I learned to just give my monsters max HP. :) Part of that is learning how to balance the challenge to your players.
