Free Ad Space Available in the Loviatar Zine

Occasionally there are troublesome blank spaces in issues of Loviatar. For fun I have filled them with old ads from Dragon. However, I'd like the blank spaces to be a bit more productive by helping people get the word out regarding their publishing projects. Loviatar is accepting 300 dpi...

A new Planescape record - visiting 7 outer planes in one session

In 1994 Planescape and Soundgarden went together for me like chocolate and peanut butter. I plan to re-visit the planes very soon. Thank you for your inspiring post. Seven planes...that is amazing!

Do grognards have to be jerks?

I sometimes feel that adherents to "old school" styles of play are often inflexible in their opinions. There seems to be a refusal to accept that fun, playable games have been written after 1983. To support this assertion, I would direct you to any number of "Old School Renaissance" blogs. I...

An apology for RPG combat (and why I love it)

I enjoy combat as well, provided there is a purpose for it. Mindless hacking bores me, but armed conflict to settle a long-simmering dispute is delicious.

    The "necessary optimization" argument

I tell my players that an effective (optimized) character is far less useful to me than an interesting one. I don't run the kind of game where they must have just the right build or their character will die screaming after being vastly outclassed by adversaries. I do run the kind of game that...

    your penalty for character death

If/when a PC dies in my Pathfinder game, the new character may enter play at the same level as the other party members. I see no point in penalizing a player with a lower level character. I hope you can find a way to still enjoy the campaign.

D&D 4E DM New to 4e Seeking Advice

Thanks for the advice on the skill challenges. A DM at the FLGS also suggested keeping them fast and loose so as to not lose the freeform role-playing that so many players are accustomed to.

D&D 4E DM New to 4e Seeking Advice

Hello all, I hope to start a D&D 4e campaign for the first time. I was hoping that you experienced 4e DMs could give me a heads up on anything that might ease my transition from 3.5 to 4e. For example, a man at my FLGS suggested using the plastic colored rings from 20 ounce soda bottles to...

    [West L.A.] D&D 4e

Hello fellow gamers, I'm looking to put together a group of friendly, cheerful gamers for 4e on Sunday afternoons in West L.A.. If a four hour time slot on Sunday does not work, we could always try to meet for 2 - 2.5 hours during the week in a D&D Encounters style of play. While I have played...

The thing I miss most from AD&D is...

Besides the people I used to play it with, I miss the easy to digest rules. The new version is going to have a 3rd PHB coming out in 2010. Three?! Tooooo many rules.

Iridia 98 Is In The Mail

April 20, 2009; Iridia No. 98; (nWoD) Hunter: The Vigil 8 pages; digest format; $0 One thing I like about the new World of Darkness is the emphasis on local supernatural themes instead of a focus on world-spanning metaplots. With that in mind, I decided to keep it close to home once again. In...

April 6, 2009; Iridia No. 96; Random 2 pages; single sheet; $0 With this issue, the zine turns three years old. Happy Birthday, Iridia! Real Life (tm) events have had me a bit down, so this issue reads like one long On Point commentary. I talk about our Werewolf: The Apocalypse campaign, my...
