Iridia 92 Is In The Mail

March 9, 2009; Iridia No. 92; AD&D 2e 9 pages; digest format; $0 During the 90s my friends and I played a lot of AD&D 2e. Preparation for play was often minimal. I'd scribble a quick regional map, sketch a dungeon, then off we'd go. The games were always a lot of fun and in many ways, it was an...

Iridia 91 Is In The Mail

March 2, 2009; Iridia No. 91; Basic D&D 8 pages; digest format; $0 Iron Rations returns! The Iron Rations series of articles, which tracks the exploits of four quarrelsome Basic D&D heroes, is back! Noting a nearly 30 issue absence, Matt Borselli, a long-time friend of the zine, penned his own...

Friday Night Campaign In West LA

We've got two players signed up so far. :) If we get a third, we can start as planned on Friday, March 6. Once we have three and begin playing, we can hopefully add one or two more.

I Think I Am Going About It Wrong

Hello everyone, Many thanks for all of the replies. I agree that the retro clones really can be used to provide a rules-light, quality role-play experience. I say this because the existence of rules to govern non-combat interactions don't necessarily enhance play. I've gamed since 1983 and I...

Friday Night Campaign In West LA

Hello everyone, My name is Christian and I would like to host a Friday night campaign. We’d meet at my apartment in West LA (near Sepulveda and Santa Monica Blvd) from 6:30pm until 10pm. I plan on running a fantasy game with one of the following systems (in descending order of preference)...

Iridia 90 Is In The Mail

February 23, 2009; Iridia No. 90; Miniatures/Misc. single sheet; $0 I'm taking it a little easy this week with a single sheet. I think that I've managed to squeeze a lot into a small space, though. The Role of Books is new column. It's an homage to an old Dragon mag column of the same name. In...

I don't even play 4e, but I learned a lot just from your presentation. Very well done!

I Think I Am Going About It Wrong

Thanks everyone. You have confirmed my suspicions that the old style games can be played without the dungeon crawl orthodoxy. I really hope to get a game going sometime to test it all out. Peace, Christian

Iridia 88 Is In The Mail

February 9, 2009; Iridia No. 88; Labyrinth Lord 20 pages; digest format; $0 I've been meaning to produce a hand-written issue for a while. I guess it's another attempt at getting back to the roots of zine publishing. I've always enjoyed reading hand-written zines. I like the energy and...

I Think I Am Going About It Wrong

I bought print copies of Labyrinth Lord and Swords and Wizardry. I've read and enjoyed them both. I've been looking for a rules-light fantasy system and I think one or both might be just what I am looking for. In order to see what other people are doing with these games, I've been following...

Players: Do You Buy Your Own Miniatures?

That is very cool! I'm impressed by the number of DMs who paint their players' figs. :)

    Miniatures terrain

Regarding Dwarven Forge, I think there's a way to keep the costs down. I have a few sets, but not enough to make a larger dungeon. Before play I lay down a few sheets of the large tablet paper from Staples, the sheets with the 1" grid. During play I only build the rooms or passages that are...

    Miniatures terrain

I think it can be. While the scenario you described is pretty cool, I've found that not everyone prefers that style of play. I've tried to run large skirmish battles with my current group and found them to be neutral. I get the sense that the people who post here regularly don't mind minis...

    Miniatures terrain

I am also a fan of Dwarven Forge. Sometimes I'll even spend hours building a custom piece of terrain for a session. I really like a 3D element to play. While some folks find terrain distracting, I think it helps we with immersion. It's neat to see the game world on the table before me. The...

Have you seen the aboleth mini?

That "aboleth" mini makes me angry. Not "I'm a kick mah cat!" angry, but disappointed nonetheless.

Players: Do You Buy Your Own Miniatures?

I like to use lots of minis and terrain in my sessions. I guess I've never gotten over my delight in playing with "army men." At any rate, only one player in five brought their own mini. The others claimed a fig from my collection and that was fine.
